They have always been there. Your risk of being run over by beach patrol is higher than being bitten by a shark.

I'm aware.

You can die driving to the store but people don't generally consider going to Aldi to be "life-threatening".

Try to be less dumb, Beauw.

Not even for a cuddly fellow mammal.

Tell us he's not a city boy, born and bred. County boys would understand that a bird caught in a net already would have broken bones in its wings and unable to fly.
Somehow I doubt that there are seagull rescue groups out there just waiting to take it in to 'rehab' it.

So you're arguing that a situation, where a person died, was not life threatening? And swimming into the ocean to untangle a seagull is as routine as driving to Aldi?

That's your argument?

Try to be less of a fricking moron Turnblad85, oh and try to be way less snarky, you are terrible at it and you embarrass yourself.

You're arguing that anytime a person dies, they were in a life-threatening situation?

Take a nap. Maybe you'll wake up less stupid.

Doubling down on idiocy and failure does not make you look any better, moron.

Driving to work everyday is not the same thing as jumping into the ocean to try to save a bird trapped in fishing line.

By all means, I encourage you to jump your stupid arse off any pier you see to try and save as many animals as possible.

Undertow can get almost anyone, regardless of the activity they're participating in while in the water.

Spring Break my freshman year at LSU we went down to Destin. Drunk on the beach and a bunch of sorority girls in bikinis are tossing a beach ball around (MAN I MISS THE 80'S!). Wind blows ball into the ocean and, like a dumb arse kid, I storm off into the water to save it and be a hero to the sorority girls. It never occurs to me as I am swimming out that the ball is getting further away. I finally reach it and turn around now realizing I am about 100 yards off shore and already pretty damn tired.

I try swimming back for maybe 60 seconds when it occurs to me that there is no way I am getting back to shore. I sober up very, very quickly. I latch onto that ball and the current is taking me out to sea. About the time the people on the beach are distant dots the size of ants, some guy on a jet ski comes riding up and cooly says "you want a ride?" Luckily for me, one of my buddies saw me go for the ball and kept his eyes on me the whole time. Once he realized what was happening, he hauled arse down the beach and came across a jet ski rental guy and talked them into coming to get me.

Long story short, I made it back in and brought the ball back to the girls. But, to the point, I was never again cavalier about the ocean.

Last year I was in South Carolina and pulled over to help a turtle walking across the hwy. Some POS came through going about 50mph swerving off the road about 3ft while looking down at his phone. I literally missed death by a couple inches while my kids and wife was watching dad save a reptile.
used to do that myself all the time, til the day a few years ago where i read a news story on the OT about a guy who got killed in front of his family by a hit and run driver in the situation you described

the thought of my kids’ last image of me would be getting splattered by some inattentive SUV driver while holding a turtle finally broke me of the habit
