Relying on subverting the market with poor/slave labor hurts American labor.

But that argument doesn't apply in this case where they are paid above local market wages for similar labor classes.

You said $12/hour, which is laughably low for this job, but relatively high for the class of people who should want these jobs but choose the $10/hour jobs that aren't fulltime instead.

I’ve eaten a lot of crawfish and I’ve never had anyone peel one for me. What’s the problem here?

2nd that. Buy a sack or two. Boil, eat what you want at that sitting. Peel and save the rest in freezer. Not that complicated. What happened 15 years ago without these workers?

don;t feel bad. hire normal people and pay normal wages.

if we could rid ourselves of China products then more of these things could normalize

I'm gonna roll up to Home Depot before my boil this Sunday. I had no idea I could get Mexicans to peel crawfish onsite.

If the crawfish Farmers had to pay American workers an hourly wage instead of a per the pound wage, then they couldn't drive their f350s and have two story houses. But they won't do that. They would rather just cry about it and try to get the government to give them subsidies.

So there is a crazy idea that would work.

What if they hired legal workers and paid them actual decent pay?

The live/boiled market can’t move all the crawfish

Also, I’m sure there’s still demand for peeled crawfish from restaurants that serve etouffee and such, correct? Plus the packs sold at stores for shoppers to cook at home.

Yes
The dumbasses here saying we’ll just peel our own know zero about the crawfish industry or ag in general

or I’ll get them from China

Frick that. I don’t buy seafood from places like China and Vietnam that farm them practically in sewage fields and tanks, with likely forced child labor involved.

Should make live crawfish cheaper as demand for them will plummet

Demand won’t plummet, but supply will explode.

Basically price should drop but due to the other part of that equation.

Might be the dumbest post here and that’s saying a lot

This is not a direct crawfish farmer issue
The h2b rate is around $20/hr - most peelers make more getting paid by the pound

This is a 4month job- you will make 20k + in those 4 months - probably more than half the jobs in these small towns
When you apply for visas- you have to advertise to Americans in local/regional papers and online - aren’t many takers

He could maybe make a little less profit and pay legal citizens to peel the crawfish.
