But, I thought Americans would do this jobs?
You pay someone to peel your crawfish?

First of all, if that wage is so fair, how come you have to import slave labor?
Locals won't do the jobs.

Second, they do NOT go home. They pop out 4 US citizen kids that soak the American taxpayer while the farmer gets rich.
Jesus. You should sit this one out.
These are legal migrant laborers who are highly regulated and do not being their family. These are not illegals

Crazy idea . . . sell them with the shells and the buyer has to peel them. Even crazier, make the buyer boil them too!
You think live and boiled sales can sustain the market? You think everyone who wants tailmeat will peel their own?
You think the live/boiled crawfish can reach as many markets as efficiently as tailmeat?

They won't so long as the government dole pays better and requires less of them.

We don’t need them peeled to boil. Send em on.

I know plenty of people who would go do this for extra money on the weekends. Sounds like the plant owners want their cake and eat it too.
They don't want to deal with the hassle of hiring anyone else. Your visa workers come in and you don't have to worry about who shows up for work.
It's pure laziness.

I hope they dump those into the live market and drop we see 1.75 a lb again before I die.

It’s not cheap labor - multiple people have told you this in this thread
The work is seasonal, which makes it unattractive. Folks prefer a job that they can work year round. This is seasonal surge employment. That’s why American agriculture has always used migrant seasonal workers to fill the gap.

These 3 million unemployed teenagers in southern Louisiana, put their asses to work.

Tha's odd, cause I damn sure haven't noticed a shortage of Latino shoppers in the walmarts

Peelers are $.50-.$60/# every year after Easter
Field run has been down $1.25 every year for last 5
Multiple restaurants sell washed crawfish for $50 or under after lent
No subject on this board brings out more ignorance than a crawfish thread

Also standing up or sitting on a stool in a cold room peeling crawfish for 10 hours a day is unattractive in itself seasonal or not

They used to. In the early 90s they were paying $1 a lb. I know because my buddy's family owned a processing plant.
quote:
We have been told they pay $22.50 per hour.
How many pounds could an experienced peeler do per hour?
10? 20? 40? 60?
Anyone have an answer? Are they companies afraid at a $1 per pound they would pay a peeler more than the $22.50 per hour?

3-4 sacks a hour so around 21-28# of tailmeat an hour
Also most do pay by the pound
