My dog is like a 2nd son.

Someone called once and let us know he was out of the back yard, I bolted out of work to go make sure he didn't get ran over or something.

I'd take the day off if mine died for sure

Had a job where I took a day off to go to my wife’s aunts funeral. And my boss gave me a “documented verbal warning”. Saying since it wasn’t an immediate family member.

Later that year a co-worker of mine dog died and she took a few days off work and nothing was said to her when she came back....

I thought about it for a few days and went right on to HR and file a complaint and stated that if this issue could not be resolved, that I would have no choice but to get the LWC and EEOC involved. Because a dogs life was more valuable than a humans.

They took that shite serious and my boss got a “formal conduct document (write-up)”, I could not be scheduled to work when he was in charge for the shift, and 3 days of vacation.

Dogs don’t die on your schedule. When your dog dies there things that have to be done like burying him. There also might have been a medical emergency just prior to his dog dying that needed his attention.

Is he supposed to leave his dead dog on the living room floor or in his yard for flies and ants to make a big mess of?

I called out the morning my dog died, but only because I had to bury him. I went in and worked the afternoon.

If he's calling out due to emotional distress...it's not something I would do, but understand the emotional attachment for sure.

As someone who had to put her 13 year old dog to sleep on Thanksgiving night, I feel accurate in calling you a POS.

You don't call in sick because you're frickin' dog died. Unless you're the only one who lives with it and you don't want a rigored dog in your house when you get home from work.

Some people, and this may shock you, are capable of having emotions and empathy

I have both those things and the sense to not assign human qualities to animals.

There's no way i would inconvenience my co-workers over a dead pet unless i was the only one who lived with the beast and for practical reasons, i was the only one who could deal with the problem. But if i've got family at home, the animal can be delt with until i later could get involved in some way.

Can someone tell me what industry this guy works in that "called out" is used? I've never heard of that.

Those of us that work in a professional office for a good company are allowed to take off for personal reasons when things come up.
