This is what I don't understand about managers. If you have time off and have to take it let them take it. Why does it matter unless there is a real emergency that would cause the business to go under.

I will never forget when I was moving many years ago and wanted to take a week to move (since I had no help) and my manager said that it should only take 3 days and that's all he would give me. I had 2 months of PTO to use and he would only "LET" me use 3 days for a move. It was a big WTF moment in terms of how a manager thinks.

If he's too sad to work...yes.

If he has to deal with handling the situtation, absolutely not.

1) as already stated..if the dude has the time available, it matters not WHY he used it.

2) If my dog died yesterday, I very well may be wanting / needing some time off

3) And MOST important: I KNOW my wife would be broken up beyond words. If she needs me to be there with her, I don't give a sick rat's arse whether I "get" it or not. I expect that she would need the day and I KNOW she would want me there with her. So, frick your disdain. I'm not coming in.

I am single and no kids. My dog is my life. I’d need a few days to get myself right if she died. I’d still be messed up about it for months.

Yep, no reason to force employee to come in when dealing with this. He has sick leave or annual leave for a reason. This is one of those reasons.

The way you worded this I thought he was made fun of at work. Like “Jerry, you sorry sack of shite, how could you let your dog die?”

Dog yes. If it’s a man and he had a cat, I’d tell him to take the rest of his life off.

I mean, if i wake up one morning and my dog is dead--I'm not just going to leave his body lying in the back yard while I go to work. I would AT LEAST call in to come a few hours late.

ditto
And this goes to show you why dogs are man's best friend. Humans are selfish mofos driven by the almighty dollar. Some things are more important than work this is one of them.
