This is what you call political pandering. They were literally walking around the construction zone designed to address this problem.

No it wasn’t, dipshit. I never asked that at all, much less my first thought.

I’ll tell you what’s happening here. There is a group of people in life - maybe 25% of all people - who have empty lives. They don’t get screwed, and there is not much happiness in their lives.

These people live for the chance to be self-righteous. They scrub a thread like this to find a cause, and if there isn’t one they will intentionally misconstrue a post to cast it in the worst possible way. Then they have their opportunity to be self-righteous.

I never assumed those poor people were drinking, and I never asked if they were. Someone said alcohol was not a cause of this the same way guns aren’t the cause of murders. I simply wrote that IF the victims had been drinking it COULD be.

Thanks for the picture.

Is that the barricade the driver drove through? If so, I'm confused because the "sidewalk" is between the barricade and the road.

Are you standing on the shoulder or the bike path? If the latter,
I'm also confused because it was reported as a hit and run but based on the picture it seems her car would have come completely off the road to hit them there.

What time did you take that picture. If it was around 5:30 I may have driven by while you were taking the pics. I couldn't see the area well when I drove by because there was a truck parked on the shoulder blocking my view.

I got this off Facebook from one of the deceased’s family members.

The driver hit them as they were walking alongside the shoulder and they were thrown several feet and she proceeded to drive further into the construction zone after the impact. I don’t think there was a physical barricade there, just that orange netting, some traffic cones and the wooden plank things they have out for relocating the pipeline. The sidewalk/bike path is closed from Gourrier to Brightside.

I initially thought this happened much closer to Tigerland but it appears to be near Brightside.

Thanks kind of what I figured.

The "wooden plank things" are called mats which spreads the load from the heavy equipment while protecting the ground from getting torn up from their tracks. (I'm not trying to be a jerk; just wanted to let you know what they're called).

Thanks Cajun. Rey is a really good guy. Shane had a bright future in the department. That kid loved being a fireman. Always wanting the smoke. Going to miss having him around, talking with him about sports and such. My daughter knows his brother Sean, so she is sad about it as well. Just a good family all around.
Sorry for your loss as well, because we both know what a great dude Suga Shane was. Take care of those guys over at 3D and hit me up if y’all need anything.

My Dad TB was NOFD back in the day, along with his cousin Jimmy.

Seem like really good kids who would have done many more good things for others than they had done already.

Couple killed by allegedly impaired driver near LSU together since high school, families say

…Leah Fonte and Shane Hirstius first met in the sixth grade, and their families say the two kids instantly became best friends. By their freshman year in high school, their romance began.

Shane went on to become a firefighter in River Ridge. Leah Fonte went to Discovery Health Sciences Academy in Kenner and was attending LSU to become a dentist. Service, their families say, was at the cores of their characters.

“Shane’s character was the first responder -- he ran to danger,” Steven Hirstius said. “We hear that he tried to save Leah. That’s Shane. Leah’s character is spending her off-time in Panama, going to a Third World country to help with dentistry, volunteering.”

Jennifer Fonte said, “They both did everything for other people, for each other. There was no selfish bone in their body, ever.”

My wife was in a turn lane and one wasn't paying attention after navigating a curve on a 30mph road (likely going 60+) and tore the entire front end off of my wife's SUV. No insurance, they weren't ruled at fault because they claimed my wife pulled out in front of them.

The problem I have with this story is that the impact point would have proved where the collision happened and if happened like your wife said, wouldnt be her fault.

Your wife wouldn't be the first to lie about an accident.

The problem was there was no camera footage, and they didn't seem to call on any witnesses. Regardless, the accident didn't cause any harm to her driving record, and the passengers got $9-50k each in bodily injury claims.

I guess my wife using a turn lane and being stationary (not driving down it like it's an acceleration like most of the idiots here do) was the wrong thing to do.

She's probably going to get 10 years for negligent homicide. May get off of vehicular homicide since she was under the legal limit as an adult. But she's under 21 years old so its technically lower for her.

Unless the judge wants to make an example of her, she probably will get less than 20, probably 10.

Sad story. I’m betting the driver was on her cellphone. I see people daily driving down Government with phone in hand on the steering wheel. Ridiculous.

Cops' ability to determine fault based on damage and location is extremely overrated.

Show me an officer with any physics knowledge, and I'll listen.

I think the likelihood of someone not being able to navigate a curve and overcorrecting is just as likely, if not more so, then her pulling out in front of them in a turning lane.

Plus, most cops don't GAS anyway.

Pressure from the public and keeping this in the news cycle might convince the judge to hand down something strong.
