frickin' dunker training. I dunno why but I had the worst headache of my life after that was over.
Being a rec diver I am fairly comfortable underwater even with a severe problem but I wouldn't have bet on getting out then or certainly not now near 30 years after the training. I always figured I would have to perform the egress and surface with at least one person attached to my legs.

I know a lot of un-athletic fat fricks that have done it as part of training to work off shore so yeah I could definitely do it.

Yes. It’s interesting the difference between how these Marines train versus my sons Army unit.
My son’s units Helo escape training included a 60 foot drop in the simulation. Not sure if that is Army wide or just his unit.

I was in the Navy and had a guy in my division who was in a helicopter crash. He managed to escape but two others did not. It’s been twenty years and they guy is still dealing with mental and physical issues from the crash

In training... I’ve done it quite a few times. Real world is not a controlled environment.

I’ve done it before in training exercises.

They offer that class 5 days a week in south LA, baw. You just push the window and swim out. Easy peasy. Just make sure you bust the window out before you release your seatbelt or you will just be pushing yourself around the cabin.

That’s really cool. Never know when you’ll need that training. Sometimes those hitches out to the oil platforms come with some baaaad weather. Thanks for sharing OP

As someone said earlier, add in a hell of a crash into the water and also a bunch of loose shite flying around / floating in the cabin that isn’t present in the training environment.

Are you sure it wasn't just a 60' man drop into water? I think you mentioned your son was an operator so unless he is 160th I assume it was SERE at Bragg like I did so many years ago. I have never heard of an Army HOST dunker that included a drop.

Waiting for the copter to roll to escape was one of the most nerve racking things I've ever done. You really want to unbuckle and get the hell out of Dodge, especially with the water rising up your chest. I got to see a few guys before my turn that did that and it didn't work out so well for them.

That sounds dangerous for a training exercise. Is there some kind of fail safe in case something happens?

Going off of a 30 year memory of something I saw frequently... there was at least 2 guys in full scuba gear waiting in the water, just in case.

No. You weed out the weak sisters; all they do is get you killed when things get real.

They have a diver for each person in the helicopter who watches you the entire time. They know who are the weak links because they a small underwater exercise prior to the heli dunking. I've been several times and everyone is right when they say it's a controlled environment. I got stuck with a paint crew one time and every man on there was very large. We would have been fricked had we went down.
