F1 does have more fancy bleeding edge technology for sure, but last I saw it was estimated to be something like $20 million/year to run a competitive cup team.

These modern supercars aren't catching fire or burning their brakes up. If anything they're all under-tired because street-car and over ventilated in order to perform the same in death valley and in the arctic circle.
at the rednecks saying the race cars are cruising along at 200 and a modern supercar is on the bleeding edge of blowing up at 200.
Never heard of the autobahn or nurburgring. Bumpy
A lot of us here are not rednecks or even NASCAR fans. We just understand Race vs. Consumer.
We have not even got to rubbing is racing, which would completely destroy the supercars.

You don't think Ford restricts power on their street-cars due to warranty/emissions/fuel economy??
At this point we have left the original intent thread

Yeah, and I bet that doesn't count the millions in facilities you must have to run the team out of either.

Autobahn has a lot of traffic on it, you aren't going WoT for very long there anymore.
Have you seen the ring? You aren't doing WoT there either, it's quite twisty.
Different worries on a large oval vs a road course.

The original question was, could a supercar complete a 500 mile NASCAR oval race, not who would win.
As others have pointed out, a few of the classes in the 24 hours of LeMans and the 12 hour endurance races are only slightly modified supercars.
The obvious answer to the original question is "Of course."
FWIW, NASCAR doesn't run WOT for three hours. There are several pit stops, dozens of yellow flag laps, and guys letting off the throttle in the draft.

That's not a wide open oval.
At least half the track is. Also at Le Mans, cars are at full throttle for probably 80% of a lap or more.

The only really twisty part is the bit between the two Karusells. Most of the track is long straights with small twisty sections between them. Then there's the looong straight at the end so you're full throttle for a large portion of a lap.

It's a completely different game than sitting at the top end of the powerband for the entirity of the race. You are constantly shifting to keep the revs high at a place like the ring.
Stock engine cars won't be doing many laps at the ring anyway. Rolex and similar endurance car engines are far from their stock off the shelf counterparts. They could do it.

It appears that many in this thread disagree with you

I'm not saying they're the same. You said you're not wide open at the ring as much but in fact you're probably wide open for over 90% of a lap. Also going up and down through the gears probably stresses the powertrain more than just running flat for hours.

You are right, I was distracted by the ones claiming supercar would win.
Yes any supercar could complete a 500 mile NASCAR race. It would have to race its own race and not try to win. With that being said I could take the wife's 4Runner and go complete the 500 mile NASCAR race as well. What is the point to complete though, if you do not want to compete.

You don't think an Aventador can run wide open on its 22 gallon tank for the same distance a cup car can with its 17.75 gallons?
Maybe half the distance.

Then how is it that they make it through the entire Rolex 24?
Because those are race cars.

I doubt it's 90%, you can go calculate the 919 record lap there. It has gas and break indicators in that video.
It's going to stress different parts on the engine. Engines are built with that in mind. A road car isn't going to be designed by a manufacturer to make sure it meets the demands of running for hours at the top end of the power band. It's wear design is going to be more focused on street level abuse.
Your average track day at a place like Barber you run about a 10 minutes every hour or so. You aren't taking near the abuse with a street car.

Depending on the class at LeMans, they may not be modified at all. Many of them are so highly modified, there is little of the original car left.

Disagree. Sure they could complete a 500 mile run, if done at their pace. You can do the same in a 1973 VW Beetle too. I would bet few, if any supercars would finish a 500 mile NASCAR race if they tried to finish less than 25 laps down to the NASCAR guys.

I've completed the coke 600 like that.

Think it'd be closer to 100 laps down. It would be just a total disaster.

OP included a mention of the supercar running flat out for most of the experiment. Obviously it could compete the race driving 50mph.
