Medical professionals are saying only the sick need to wear a mask.

Then they cite examples of people unknowingly infecting others for days before exhibiting symptoms.

What am I missing here? Shouldn't a major part of slowing the spread be wearing a mask when in crowded situations - especially for those at higher risk?

To me churning out masks seems at least as important as
churning out COVID test kits.

a few years ago we were going to create a superbug with all of the hand sanitizers.... now we are supposed to use hand sanitizer nonstop.

Rather than wear the mask just gargle hand sanitizer.

It’s easily to see inconsistencies when you don’t know WTF is going on.

It was over putting antibiotics in sanitizers, which is completely unneeded and confers no added benefit.

There was never anything wrong with using as much sanitizer as you want.

What I heard a doctor say yesterday, that when people wear masks, they will touch their face a lot more often when adjusting the mask, making infection more likely. Kind of makes sense in a strange way.

there've been tons of threads that have posts explaining why masks can actually make things worse. I don't feel like regurgitating the reasoning. Someone will be along shortly to do that.

Sick need to self quarantine. PPE should be reserved for direct healthcare providers

Basic surgical masks don’t do much to reduce spread.

And we don’t want to deplete our N-95 masks because the healthcare system needs them more than we do.

I seem to recall there being a statement that we were actually killing too much bacteria with hand sanitizer.

In absence of an n-95, P100 mask are a great substitute, while more expensive, they filter out 99% of particulates vs an n-95 at 95%

Put a garbage bag over your head and duct tape it tightly around your neck. 100% effective. And economical. One use only though.

no

you're supposed to wash your hands

hand sanitizer is just for situations where you can't wash your hands

idiots who are hoarding TP think "antibacterial" is important for a viral scenario and that washing hands isn't good enough

THAT is going to create a super bug

You are wrong on this.

The biggest issue is that people have gone crazy buying masks, leaving few for the medical professionals. Little Tommy having a mask just to play on his XBox is not nearly as important as a medical professional working at an ER having one.

Far more transmission happens through it being expelled by someone who is infected coughing or sneezing than it does someone who is not infected breathing it in. Even if the uninfected are masked, they still have a high chance of getting it because of their touching infected surfaces then eventually touching their faces.

So it's far more effective to cover the mouths of those infected than those uninfected.
