August is rice harvest season. I can promise unless they lock my husband up or he dies, he'll be out there working to get it planted, maintained and harvested.

The July/August comment totally freaks me out.

It’s easy to be an armchair quarterback.
And it’s easy to simply continue on this path of being the most conservative possible without looking at the full ramifications of those actions. Especially when mass hysteria is involved and any leader deemed not to be doing enough is going to be tarred and feathered by the mob who believe this to be the next plague.

The government would have to be paying everyone. My Dad owns a small business, there is no one to pay him paid sick leave.

As high throughput systems come online this week, testing capacity will substantially increase nationwide.

Something to keep in mind the rest of this week (and into next) is that as more testing ramps up, the numbers will spike. But that doesn't necessarily mean that social distancing measures have failed - rather that the case count we had before was inadequate and artificially lowered.

So when they jump up rapidly in the next few days, please continue to help by staying at home as much as possible.

Senate is reviewing the current bill and look to expand some areas. Small business owners will definitely have a tougher time than employees.

Spare me your feelings and virtue signaling. We’ve had nearly 200k flu deaths over the last 5 years and no one blinks an eye. 12k swine flu deaths in a nine month period and no one does a thing. Imagine this reaction in 2009 when the economy was already in shambles.

No one is prevented from going outside, just prevented from going to bars and restaurants.

Why is the CDC director (Redfield) never at these White House press conferences or taking an active role it seems?

Dr Fauci who is director of NIAID seems to be the face of the medical side of things and doing most of the speaking, interviews etc. Not that I have a problem with him as he seems to be a pretty straight shooter. Just wondering why CDC is taking a back seat. Is it because they fricked things up the last couple months? I only started watching these press conferences a few days ago.

He's been worthless

People of all stripes trust Fauci and that's why he and Birx are the public advocates.

The harsh reality is that we have to, at some point, place a value on a life. What if this flares up every year like the flu, which kills tens of thousands? We don't shut everything down for the flu, so why this?

At this point, we seem to be valuing a life at somewhere north of a billion dollars. That's just not sustainable.

I refuse to believe it has mutated without more evidence

Italy and South Korea’s data is similar when you look at each individual age bracket separately.

The differences in CFR aren’t mutations, you are just seeing two extremes of the demographic spectrum.

I agree with this article, some of the measures being taken (like in San Francisco) seem insane to me:

quote:

Some Ask a Taboo Question: Is America Overreacting to Coronavirus?
With “social distancing” now widely adopted nationwide, a small group of contrarians urge a more careful weighing of the harm as well as the benefits of such policies.

quote:

No one wants to be seen as prioritizing profit or, say, youth soccer over saving lives. But in recent days, a group of contrarian political leaders, ethicists and ordinary Americans have bridled at what they saw as a tendency to dismiss the complex trade-offs that the measures collectively known as “social distancing” entail.

Besides the financial ramifications of such policies, their concerns touch on how society’s most marginalized groups may fare and on the effect of government-enforced curfews on democratic ideals. Their questions about the current approach are distinct from those raised by some conservative activists who have suggested the virus is a politically inspired hoax, or no worse than the flu.

LNCHBOX, I responded to why the 0.5% CFR is a likely minimum as an average across the US.

I gave you data and information, and you did nothing but troll. Germany is testing very extensively. The Diamond Princess case was tested about as well as you can.

Yes as testing ramps up the CFR will look better. But using today's infections vs today's fatalities is misleading as fatalities lag infection by a couple weeks. When you consider the doubling time is five to six days for this outbreak, you should be cutting the number of cases at least in half.

The true CFR is only known where you have a closed system (Diamond Princess) or once the peak of the spread has sufficiently passed. And as health systems get inundated with cases the CFR will increase ala Wuhan and Italy. Age is obviously a huge factor in where different countries end up. That favors Germany and hurts Italy and China.

So do we panic now or is it not really that bad

This needs to be plastered somewhere. THE NUMBERS WILL RISE. IT DOESN'T MEAN WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!! Just part of it and none of us like it.
