And it’s easy to simply continue on this path of being the most conservative possible without looking at the full ramifications of those actions.
The countries you are praising like South Korea did this a long time ago. Why aren’t you shitting on them for wrecking their economy?

We’ve had nearly 200k flu deaths over the last 5 years
We have a fairly effective vaccine for influenza, and at our hospitals mandate that any employee - clinical or not - get the vaccine annually as a condition of employment.
Influenza has a number of readily-accessible tests with quick turnarounds for positive diagnoses.
We have some measure of treatment for influenza (putting the total efficacy of oseltamivir and others aside, they do have some limited use).
Being exposed to certain strains of influenza can confer resistance or immunity for decades for the same strain.
None of the above statements are true for covid-19. There is no vaccine - and won't be for a year or more. There is no treatment - even if we find something that's clinically helpful, it's unlikely it gets into wide use before the epidemic curve starts the downturn. There is no inherent immunity in any segment of the population - as shown by the mortality data, this is hitting the elderly particularly hard.
Add to that that this has a CFR of 10-30x more (80x in Italy) than influenza, and you'll begin to understand why you're being selfish.

Don’t twist my words a-hole. We all praised SK for their testing because it gave us better data to use and extrapolate. Just like we all dumped on the US’s testing policy. I’ve said nothing about them keeping their numbers low.

The true CFR is only known where you have a closed system (Diamond Princess) or once the peak of the spread has sufficiently passed.
The Diamond Princess data is most likely the high end for the CFR here in the US. The average age on that ship was 58. The average age in the US is 38. That makes a huge different for a virus that kills mostly older individuals.

THE NUMBERS WILL RISE. IT DOESN'T MEAN WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!
Yep. The numbers will rise. And even if it spreads to 100% of the susceptible population, that still doesn't mean everyone will die.
But if we act now, we can keep the deaths around 10-20,000 instead of 100-200,000 (or higher).

You need to factor inflation into your equation. Still got a long ways to go tho.

I agree. Just saying that I also agree with people shouldn't freak out when the numbers go up, up, up.

Awww shite. My good friend's wife just got a presumptive positive test for the WuFlu in Baton Rouge. Would be one of the first in EBR. Waiting on lab results.
Haven't seen him in a few weeks.
That wasn't based on an actual test, just FYI. Just based on exposure.

For the testing yes. But you ignore their quarantining and social measures like it’s not happening, and are throwing a fit because we are doing the same thing they did.
Testing doesn’t do any good if you don’t act on it.

quote:The most complete testing gives you the most complete picture so you can act ACCORDINGLY. We know this isn’t 30x as deadly as the flu but people are still spouting off those numbers. We know it’s less deadly for those under 65 even when compared to the flu. So why don’t we use that info that we KNOW so that we don’t ruin businesses and lives while trying to save a few thousand people? Again, quarantine the elderly and let people live their lives and stop causing this panic which is becoming way worse than the actual virus itself.
Testing doesn’t do any good if you don’t act on it.

@J__Velasquez
NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio says he anticipates asking the federal government to send health care workers from other states that haven’t been hit hard to help coronavirus efforts in NYC.
Not that I want to see people get sick or die but NYC isn't any more important than other areas.

I personally scoff at the idea too, although I probably shouldn't
But tell me your position, based on the math, as to why this event wouldn't result in a couple hundred thousand deaths if measures weren't taken?

Yea and tell us what South Korea did
You want me to start posting stories where people in South Korea died while waiting to be seen because their health system was at its breaking point right before they turned it around? How do you think they did that?
ETA: you just switched to this quarantine the elderly idea. You been complaining for days about us doing anything out of the ordinary. I’m not completely opposed to your idea I just think it’s too big of a gamble until this first wave passes. I think the cases could still increase too rapidly.
