What do NYC’s numbers look like?

I guess at this point frick it. If we’re gonna cancel every thing anyway might as well go full quarantine and fully snuff this thing out

Ok, so what should he have done?

Once we saw how bad it was getting in China we should have immediately ramped up test production to prepare for it coming here as it was only a matter of time. He then should have had anyone coming in from any country that had it tested the moment they set foot on US soil. He should have not blown it off day after day like it wasn't worth worrying about. He should have never falsely claimed the spread was going down. He should have never gone into a televised meeting so woefully unprepared that he actually asked the doctors if we could just use a really good flu vaccine to stop it. Things like that.

The biggest factor for snowballing was Gobert & Mitchell testing positive and the NBA season being cancelled on live tv. That started the closures rolling.

Getting tests ready starting in January and testing/monitoring/quarantining everyone who came back from a danger zone.

That simple. We would be in 100x better position

Maybe using the WHO tests until we developed and tested our own would have been helpful. Being so far behind with testing is just unacceptable. But I put that blame on CDC. I did cringe when Trump when on tv saying it was all under control.

It's not just about deaths
However, anytime someone disagrees with the cancelations they are met with the following :

“I guess you don’t care if your grandparents get corona”

“You don’t care about people dying”

Etc etc

I have point blank been told that by multiple posters

If you want to argue medical necessities, fine. But that is absolutely not the main refute here nor the public

Can you imagine if Trump had suggested from the jump that we quarantine people traveling from other countries? The news headlines would have been something to read.

I mean, you have Democrats actively trying to lift the EU travel ban he just put in place.

Many more people will die if the healthcare system is overrun.

That's what is happening in Italy. It hit them so hard and fast they were overwhelmed.

South Korea is in a better position b/c they started testing the frick out of everyone almost immediately so they were able to isolation the infected and slow the spread.

So yes, it's not just about the amount of deaths this can cause but the fact that many of the deaths could perhaps have been stopped if we had just taken some simple preventative steps.

It’s not just about corona deaths is probably the better way to say it.

All he really would have had to do to nip the majority of the negative headlines in the bud would have been to point to China straight up bulldozing all roads to Wuhan, welding people into homes, arresting anyone who tried to leave, and spraying down their streets with bleach to stop the spread. Then once it slammed the frick out of Italy he'd have locked up his reelection overnight.

Quit using their poorly constructed arguments in your poorly constructed counter-arguments

Better yet, quit arguing in this thread. Updates, links, information, quality discussion! That’s why we are here.

I think what we can say confidently is that the asymptomatic rate is not 70, 80, or 90%
Pure speculation based on educated guessing, which is the best we can do now - Asymptomatic, I would probably peg the general population at 30-40%, then probably peg sub-clinical at 30-35%. We will likely never know exactly though.

He didn't care about negative headlines with the middle eastern travel ban. The optics were that he downplayed it and didn't get in front.

Right, because we want our government to strive to be more like China. Come on man, I'm not saying he shouldn't have taken additional steps to get ahead of this, but anything he did was going to be heavily criticized by the media.

Heard less new cases today than previous 2. How does this go along with "sweeping through the US like wildfire?" Been seeing people constantly saying new cases will double daily

Hindsight is 20/20

Also, considering the incubation period, by the time the virus was already spreading in Italy but before it started being noticed, many Italians would have flown to America for work, family, tourism etc.

Looking at a viral outbreak is like looking at a star. You are looking back in time
