This thing has been in China since early December. We didn’t react to it until late January.
Thousands of people came to the US from the infected area before we shut it down. It’s likely been here since early January, which is why the testing guidelines at this point being travel related is mind boggling stupid

If you are saying this in hopes the hospital will do something,No, they will send him right back home currently
Disagree with my other opinions, but I promise you he would be turned right around and sent home at this point of his symptoms
If he simply wants to get tested, call hospitals around him and setup a time to come in just to get tested. Those testing should work with him
Well, I work for a hospital company that is one of the largest in the world/US and we are currently testing** people in our ERs in the "at risk" age group that have clear symptoms and test negative for the flu.
But your suggestion works too, it would still require him to go get tested at a hospital, but just in a scheduled manner.
ETA:
**Where we have available tests...some rural places haven't gotten enough to test everyone they want.

it’s a novel virus that spreads rapidly then it’s nonsensical to think that it took more than a month to make it over to the US.

Keeping in mind there is a shortage of test and testing capabilities, I don't see the point in many of these individuals getting tested. Hospitals are turning away patients who don't need acute care. You get tested, it's positive, you go in quarantine until the illness breaks or your symptoms worsen.

I haven’t had a chance to read this thread, but are we all in agreement that this virus has infected way way way more people than have tested positive and for most people the symptoms are incredibly mild?

You just pointed out the reason to get tested
You self-quarantine.
And I agree, if you're young and healthy, just stay home if you feel bad. If you're old though, you need to act on this quickly. The sooner you get confirmation, the sooner they will start aggressively treating it however they can to prevent death.

The US would have multiple patient zeros, From China, Italy, Egypt and that one from the UK in Nebraska are known (I think?).
Individual states are picking up their “patient zeros” from other states as well (California, Washington).

Yes, likely tens of thousands of people that aren't being included in the numbers.

I feel like we need to create a list of general guidelines and FAQ and ask for a sticky. People like Volvagia could pitch in too. Think this would be helpful?

Shelby County Schools (Memphis) will close until March 30th.

By next week you can assume you are coming in contact w a carrier.

My wife is an ER nurse, and said her hospital has established triage tents outside to screen ALL patients. People are used to walking into an ER, complaining of symptoms, then seeing a doctor after an hour or two wait. Things have changed. Go to a hospital right now without major symptoms and a scheduled visit and you will most likely be turned away.

If I get it I am not going to hospital unless I get really sick. No way I am clogging up system just because.

Well yeah, without symptoms.
I was telling the guy with a father over the age of 70 who has symptoms and tested negative for the flu already to go to a hospital.
Not every situation is the same. That is the kind of person that needs to get tested ASAP. He is in the at-risk age group for serious complications and/or death. He has symptoms and it isn't the flu. That is a textbook case of who SHOULD go get tested at a hospital ASAP.

Neither would I at age 50 and healthy but my mom or dad with their heart issues (she has seriously like 15 stents and he has only two working heart vesels), if they came down with fever, cough and issues breathing I’d want them checked out of course for flu first but then further if that was negative. They are 75 and 71. .
Who knows how quick they would go from “some” difficulty breathing to needing help with breathing.

Random thought — are there no meds that can be given via breathing treatments to help with this? At least to ease breathing issues?
