this virus has infected way way way more people than have tested positive
I think that is safe to assume, especially here, considering the US is so far behind on testing.
quote:
for most people the symptoms are incredibly mild?
That's true for some, but "incredibly mild" isn't accurate. About 20% need hospitalization and 15% of those being hospitalized are dying. Of the 80% not being hospitalized, they are typically experiencing flu-like symptoms. The flu sucks and isn't something you'd consider "incredibly mild". Yes, there are people testing positive that are asymptomatic, but this is not the common cold or the flu like many would have you believe.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), said he thinks the mortality rate is about 1% when factoring in cases we don't know about. This makes this 10 times worse than the flu. So people can downplay it all they want, but the data in front of us is basically saying you have something 10 times more deadly than the flu and no one has had a vaccine for it. This is ramping up and the countries that are in a decline (China) are accomplishing it by imposing Draconian responses.

I’m all of a sudden really worried about my parents more so than before. Dads already on the thin side and any basic virus or illness kicks his rear.

I told my parents (one >70, other >80) to stay inside and avoid crowds a couple weeks ago. I probably wont visit them for a couple months.

My dad will be 69 next month and has diabetes and my mom is in her late 50s with having breast cancer recently. I'm worried about them and keep telling them they should take this a little more seriously than they are. Like many on here they are saying, "its just the flu".

this is why that rhetoric is harmful.

I’m supposed to go to my nephews 3rd birthday party Sunday — don’t know if I should or not as I have the same worries about my parents.

My parents are late 60's but both in great health.
But my in-laws are mid-70s and both have had serious battles with pneumonia the last 5 years or so. They live a pretty secluded life on a lake, I told them to stock up on food and not leave for a couple weeks, which I think they can do.

You can’t stop living your life. But you can reduce risks significantly by avoiding certain situations like large crowds.
Educate your family that they need to avoid others if they have a fever or flu symptoms. If your family is healthy and asymptomatic then go for it. You can’t reduce risk to zero, you can just eliminate the most risky situations.

If you haven't been freaking out about the flu potentially getting them you need to get your fricking panties out of a wad

From a previous post of mine; I’m thinking they should stay home.
“but my mom or dad with their heart issues (she has seriously like 15 stents and he has only two working heart vesels), if they came down with fever, cough and issues breathing I’d want them checked out of course for flu first but then further if that was negative. They are 75 and 71.”

20% of those tested. I'd bet a vast majority of the mild cases go untested.

your parents should definitely stay home. They are the type of people that should be put on lockdown, not every person in America

It's amazing how, despite loads of easily digestible information, people can remain so uninformed.

You need to go away.
This is likely far more deadly than the flu and FAR more contagious.

You really need to take a breath, and do a little research, this virus is 20% lethal to people over 70.
The flu is .02% lethal to them
These things are not the same
