Exactly. The US has 36 deaths. Extrapolated using 0.7% death rate thats about 5000 cases. But we’ve only tested like 1000. 200 people out of 5000 is just 4%.

20% of those tested. I'd bet a vast majority of the mild cases go untested.

Correct.

Only the most severe cases are getting tested

Who said the elderly don't fear the flu?

I think the argument is that COVID is a threat for the elderly with issues. That is indeed concerning.

It's amazing how, despite loads of easily digestible information, people can remain so uninformed.

I have been following the info, which is exactly why im not worried about this. I choose not to indulge in all the fear porn people are pushing along with the info. Obviously many of you here including yourself have chosen to fall for the fear porn.

We just made the difficult decision of postponing my parents 50th wedding anniversary party this Sunday. Way too many elderly folks there to take the risk...but they are so disappointed.

He’s been saying the same exact phrases for the past few days. He’s just trolling

No, I just understand statistics and scale. I also understand that the transmission rates, transmission potential, and cCFR of COVID-19 are not like the flu.

I'm not freaking out; I am also not posting utter nonsense on a message board.

Well, that's a no brainer. One asymptomatic, younger sick person there could lead to disastrous outcomes for a ton of elderly in attendance.

This is my worry

big anniverssaries, weddings, life events, are being cancelled

Hell, people say, "its just sports", but if the ncaa tourny gets cancelled, thats huge life moments for people that have worked their life to get there

These things should not be taken so lightly, but I feel like they are in the name of fear, better be safe than sorry

Maybe these are the right steps and I am wrong, but geez, I just dont know

None are in nursing homes...but we knew it was the right decision to make...but horrible timing to ruin such a special occasion that most folks don't get to experience. Hopefully nothing crazy happens so they can have their celebration later this year.

It's not. These numbers might be a little dated, but this shows a 14.8% mortality rate for people over the age of 80 and an 8% mortality rate for people ages 70-79.

This is likely far more deadly than the flu and FAR more contagious.

More deadly, yes

Explain how it is MORE contagious, please.

That number has been frustratingly stagnant to some. We got any Covid suitcase nukes we can set off in a few more nursing homes?

I think they're the right steps to slow this shite down. It will undoubtedly do that.

my dad (73) is scheduled for back surgery in the morning. I'm taking him and trying to convince my mom (74) to stay home. Dad has heart & lung issues, hypertension, and is diabetic. I'm not even sure if he should go in for surgery tomorrow morning or reschedule.

Am I being overly cautious?
