Unless it is a leak from that level 4 lab that some have mentioned.
Just stirring the pot.

I guess I should have lower expectations even when it's not PT

Give me a link on that reproductive ratio.

Obviously 1 is too many; however, considering that: (1) schools are like Petrie dishes; (2) kids are not the best at doing things that prevent the spread of germs; and (3) those figures include those that aren’t “otherwise healthy,” I wouldn’t call that alarmingly high.
The flu kills a staggering number of otherwise healthy kids each year.

Ultimately, I have confidence that the US and similar democracies will control this crisis. However, I am alarmed at China's irresponsibility. Lots of people will needlessly die simply because China can't admit one simple damn problem until it reaches crisis proportions.
China is basically the next door neighbor that builds a fence on your property, lets its dog poop in your lawn, and holds loud parties at 3AM. But then, it complains to the HOA because your Christmas decorations are offensive to its delicate sensibilities.

You're missing the point. Point is the seasonal flu is a far, far greater risk to the average American right now.
Of course. Key word is right now. The concerning thing is the numbers appear to be growing in an exponential fashion. Worst case scenario would take months.
Most likely it won’t be a big deal, but the potential threat is much higher than flu. China has the flu too and they don’t take the measures that they have in the last few days.

UPDATE: Coronavirus: As new cases surge, health experts inside and outside USG say they believe the Chinese government is significantly underreporting number of cases and deaths in that country. One estimate: numbers are likely 10x higher. Our story. wapo.st/2RnfekG

Cancer did not suddenly come into existence when we discovered it and were able to diagnose it. It “spread” exponentially and it’s not even an infectious disease.

I'm not saying generations of kids are being wiped out, but the number of deaths is very high when you compare it to what most people THINK the flu is. You would think that it would cause people to educate themselves but it does not.
The amount of people that shite on anti-vaxxers but at the same time don't get their kids a flu shot is pure hypocrisy.

I agree that the US has plenty of corruption and inequality fostered by backroom politics.
But it's a severe understatement to say that China is simply "worse." In fact, such moral equivalency arguments are dangerous because they provide cover for China to exploit weaker countries.
I've lived in China and Hong Kong, and I've done business and research in both environments. China's entire economic and political system is corrupt and dishonest on a level most Americans can't even fathom. Moreover, Xi Jinping is on a course to be regarded by history as destructive to human progress in China as Mao. It honestly breaks my heart to see the regression in Chinese society over the past ten years.

If the flue never existed, and then started tomorrow, they would.
Think about this - in the US, if you're hospitalized with the flu, there is 10-15% chance you'll die.
We wouldn't know about this new virus without someone going to the hospital, dieing, and then it being found. The fatality is often severely overstated because the only confirmed cases are often the cases that require hospitalization.
The reality is likely that there are plenty of people who have it and don't require hospitalization, just like there is with the regular flu.

And/or infected people are asymptotic and contagious and don’t know it. This will blow up or blow over in a week or so.
