Good Gawd... It does if you're carrying Comp/Coll.. If you're carrying Liab only then you'll need the UMPD endorsement on the auto policy in La to have your car covered.

If you don't have uninsured motorist on your policy I feel bad for you ,but this is LA so it is almost your fault. My aunt paid off her car, reduced her coverage, got hit by a drunk illegal, and learned a very expensive lesson. In Louisiana you can cheap out on some things ,but car insurance is not one of them. Now if you have uninsured motorist I know it sucks having to use it from your policy, but it is better than the alternative. I also assume if she has General Insurance she likely has nothing you can sue her for.

I don’t have uninsured motorists in Louisiana but I do have collision, which will cover my vehicle if damaged by an uninsured driver. I’d be out of pocket my 1,000 deductible but I’ve saved way more than that on premiums.

Did she have an expired license as well?
my insurance lapsed for 3 fricking days while i was out on vacation for 2 and a half weeks. My own fault for being lazy about not doing it before, but i just wasn't thinking about it. got back and realized it and got it paid.
then i get a letter in the mail about it lapsing and i owe all kinds of money b/c of that and have to go to the DMV and i couldn't get my license renewal at that time until i paid that crap.
and i go through all of that and wonder, how the frick are all these people driving without insurance and a license?
I know it wouldn't be popular, and i wouldn't like it b/c of how fricking stupid our gov't is and imagining the accidental mistakes they would make, but it sure would be nice if you had to scan something on our car to start it and drive, and if your license is suspended or not in good standing, or you don't have insurance, then you can't start your car.

You actually think they have a database for that inside their vehicle??
In Louisiana I am certain that they have this available to all LEOs in their car's MDT or by calling dispatch.

Aren’t police supposed to run and verify car insurance after a car accident as part of the report?
Shouldn't this be super easy to check? They should.

I had a guy with the same insurance as me who changed lanes and tagged my right front quarter panel. I thought the guy was a complete idiot, because we were the first two cars side-by-side at a red light. We start going, he pulls halfway in front of me, and changes lanes like he didn't know I was there. When we get it, out says, "Why didn't you see me?" My immediate thought was, no, dipshit, it's the other way around with you not seeing this big SUV.
Cop took both statements and the other guy was trying to BS his way into it not being his fault.
No one was ticketed.
He immediately filed a claim that afternoon.
When I finally called, the adjuster was trying to say it was completely my fault. He told the insurance company that he changed lanes completely, traffic slowed and I rear-ended him. Luckily I had snapped pictures of both cars, sent them in, and explained that he changed lanes right into me and I had zero time to react. She agreed and his insurance policy took the 100% blame hit.
It pisses me off that assholes will lie through their teeth like that to avoid responsibility; especially when someone has proof of the lie.

All they check for is proof of insurance (insurance card).
A lot of people apply for insurance, pay one month of premium (or the "down payment" to finance the premium), get the card and then cancel the policy.

THAT is the MILLION $ question ! Insurance carriers' estimate 20% + of LA driver/operators DO NOT HAVE ANY TYPE OF INSURANCE ! In the Orleans Parish the number of un-insured is well over 30% !! Why does the LA Legislature not enact stringent laws to at least ATTEMPT to curtail all these idiots ??????

Everything you love about car insurance is because….

You can always file a lawsuit. Wage garnishment may be an option if she has a job.

You’d be surprised. They do them in bulk and screw them up often. It is work, but could be worthwhile.

I don't know what the hell they do. Years ago I was hit by this girl who failed to yield. She hit my vehicle and sent me into a utility pole. I got knocked out was taken to the hospital by ambulance, but other than a slight concussion and some bruises and scratches I was good, but the same couldn't be said for my vehicle.
It was a complete mess. Evidently she just got insurance and her policy stated that it wouldn't pay out for any at fault accidents within the first 6 months. I had to go through my insurance and the whole process was a bitch because evidently my insurance was going to sue her insurance... BUT what actually happened was that she had an insurance card that was no longer valid, however; the cop who did the report didn't catch it.
My insurance was going by the report only to find out that in reality the bitch didn't even have coverage. I think she paid to get the minimum coverage and pretty much did what she had to do to get an insurance card, which is evidently good enough to get by police. And yeah, no telling how many people are riding around with the same situation.

Assuming LA laws are similar to Alabama UM would cover medical bills, BUT also pay for lost work due to contesting things in court as well as monies for pain and suffering. Having had this happen to me, this triumvirate of coverage can be HUGE to have vs not having it.

If she had an insurance card, that’s all the officer looks at. No one runs insurance information through a verification system at an accident scene.

so, how does it make sense to only get the insurance for one month and cancel?
I don’t think they cancel. They pay the lowest premium to get a card. Then never pay the bill. At some point, it’s not valid.
