common misconception, even they obviously had enough fuel to do the job, a trans con flight fuel load was no where near fully fueled for those jets
Good to know, how much % wise would you think would be put on for a flight like that.

B25 didn’t do the same.
was a much smaller plane, and this guy was scud running around NYC, at probably a very slow airspeed, the airliners hit pretty much at or better than Vmo

I can tell you that major parts of the shuttle fell to Earth intact. I personally located and have photos with a fuel or oxygen tank (big sperical carbon fiber vessel), the pilots window and a complete switch panel from the cabin. I was also present when they recovered remains from three of the astronauts
I hate to use the word “awesome” to describe something awful like that, but it’s incredible considering the velocity of the shuttle when it came apart that anything recognizable was recovered. I remember it was a double digit mach number and maybe over mach 20.

When we found the body parts we were instructed not to touch or move them. NASA flew in a team of astronauts and they would helicopter to the scene and do the recoveries themselves. They had a metal coffin and they would cover it with a US flag before loading it into the helo.
How much of their bodies were recovered?

Interesting that you posted this, bc I just read where the bodies of the astronauts were not recovered until March of 1986. The article did not give a reason why it took almost 2 months to retrieve their bodies. Do you know why?
You should start a thread on the subject and post your photos.
As for the OP - great thread - these pics are great!

Andre the Giant and pals, 1970s

that is a Big Red 250 from either 1986 or 1987 so there is no way that pic was from the 70s.
Good catch. Andre used to ride his ATV on the set of Princess Bride (1987 release). He talked Cary Elwes into riding it and Cary quickly crashed it and broke his toe. That screwed up the shooting schedule and they had to change a few scenes.
"Elwes said he "stupidly" broke his toe while goofing around on André the Giant's ATV, which caused Reiner to move the filming of Elwes' fight scene with Mandy Patinkin's Inigo Montoya toward the end of production."

Ah, okay thanks.
But if anyone knows why it took almost 2 months to find the Challenger astronauts, enlighten me. Meanwhile I am looking.
This was from a History.com "5 things you don't know about the Challenger crash". It won't link for some reason.

The old folks here might remember the old preacher at the ferry boat landing in BTR. He would baptize you in the river if you asked.
We talked about this the other day. His cross was white and would glow.

The Recovery of the Challenger Bodies
Well, found my answer, kind of wish I hadn't though. Sad and gruesome.
Sorry for the hi-jack. I'm done with this subject. Ugh.
Y'all keep these pics coming. I can't help out - on my phone.

Two different events here.
I was talking about the shuttle explosion over Texas. The Columbia.
You are talking about the Challenger in Florida. The delay was because the crew cabin and bodies went into deep waters in the ocean. I also think they couldn't locate them at first.
I will have to do a thread on that one day. I have a whole book of pics but they were taken with a film camera so I need to scan them all in.
