The shuttle didn't explode, it broke apart from aerodynamics due to speed. There was data and evidence that showed the pilot was trying to fly the crew compartment during it's decent. But it probably didn't last long because they all passed out from cabin decompression and lack of oxygen.

She didn’t know it at the time but she had accomplished something historical.

No it’s in the official investigations. Try reading some time....

The cabin survived the explosion and can even be identified in the videos. A few of the emergency oxygen canisters were activated after the explosion. No one knows if anyone was conscious for very long after the explosion, but they were alive after, just will remain unknown if anyone rode it all the way down knowing what was going on.

It's hard to imagine that the cabin retained pressure after the shuttle broke apart.

Not impossible, just unlikely.

Didn’t have to with some of them activating emergency air, the question is if they were able to stay awake with the forces.

B-25 weighs over 10x less than the commercial planes that hit the twin towers.

The b-25 also was low on fuel, while the 911 planes were still at the beginning of their fully fueled flight.

Speed was also a substantial distance as the b-25 was wanting to land/going slow and the 911 planes were full speed ramming the buildings.

I dont think the crew knew of any issues buts its almost certain Nasa knew it was entirely too cold launch but went ahead anyway because they had so many delays in the mission. There's a very good documentary on the mission here:YouTube : LINK

I think the worst part is that it's believed that the crew was alive until they hit the water. Just a horrible way to die

That photo was a little unsettling - it looks as if the baby is tied to the post.

I'm surprised no one has tried to pass that photo off as one from the Mexican border, circa now.

To us.

I bet it's in that "Presidents book"

I read a couple articles after you first posted this morning. I'd never heard of them surviving the blast until this morning.

common misconception, even they obviously had enough fuel to do the job, a trans con flight fuel load was no where near fully fueled for those jets

Don’t know about the outer frame of the Empire State, but it has a masonry core. I’ve seen it.

don’t remember hearing about anything larger than some metal fragments recovered across a 3 or 4 state area.

I worked for the government then and was out at the scene. I can tell you that major parts of the shuttle fell to Earth intact. I personally located and have photos with a fuel or oxygen tank (big sperical carbon fiber vessel), the pilots window and a complete switch panel from the cabin. I was also present when they recovered remains from three of the astronauts.

When we found the body parts we were instructed not to touch or move them. NASA flew in a team of astronauts and they would helicopter to the scene and do the recoveries themselves. They had a metal coffin and they would cover it with a US flag before loading it into the helo.

Everything I could find about it said the design differences were better designed to for fires. Doesn’t reallly matter though because the impact differences can easily be seen. The 911 planes pretty much cut through the building destroying entire floors and fire protection. B25 didn’t do the same.
