My dad's roommate in college was Billy Cannon, Jr. and they were in each other's weddings. Today my dad is closer with Sr than Jr and they talk all the time. My dad remains a huge A&M fan and has Jr's old jersey at our house in a frame kind of thing. He was pretty good while at A&M, and I think Jr is the only reason my dad likes the Cowboys today.

On my fathers side they made their wealth assassinating those who stood against the crown (Bourbon Dynasty) in Spain. They were ruthless and became fairly wealthy doing so. They moved to Cuba in the 1800's and became doctors, lawyers, and tobacco plantation owners. They would participate in regattas representing the Havana Yacht Club around the Caribbean and Europe. I assume they made money off slavery in Cuba as well.

When Castro took over he asked my great-grandfather to become the surgeon general in Cuba. He said frick no and they flew to Miami. My aunt went to Cuba a few years back and visited the family's old homes. Those who profited off the revolution live in the homes. Whenever the US decides it's time to get rid of communist cuba we're going back to claim our land.

Moms side: All I know is they're from Biella, Italy and my grandmother had a hair salon on Magazine St.

My grandfather did the original report of Bonnie and Clyde's death on the radio. The audience thought he was "live, on the scene. Oh my god, the humanity" when in fact, he was in the studio, just making shite up.

One of my Grandfather's was a Navigator on a B-24 over Europe, shot down and interned into Stalag Luft 1 in 1944. Their crew carried out the first smart bomb raids (AZON at that time), blowing up bridges and other specific targets. He wouldn't travel over the Mississippi River bridges after the war, due to PTSD.

(He's the one with bad arse mustache!)

LINK to the story if you want to read about how they went down

I have two great grandfathers on the 1907-11 LSU football teams (played in the 56-0 December 25, 1907 University of Havana game, and arguably won the 1908 national championship, going 10-0 and outscoring their opponents 442-11):

Ever heard of Lucretia Mott? She was a white abolitionist who lived in the 1800's. That name was not always clearly African American.

My great grandfather is a compulsive liar so I don't trust anything he says about ancestors. He says bullshite like his father was friends with Pretty Boy Floyd, and escaped from Angola. He claims that he didn't go to World War 2 because he has flat feet, but he was probably just dodging. All I know for a fact is that they were sharecroppers, and he was apart of building the MS River levee system...

My grandfather, on the other hand, overcame his nit wit father and was a great man. The outdoorsy folks will think it's cool that he cleared a lot of land in the 60s, including Anna's Bottom and Cat Island. He also farmed.

As far as I know, any man that I'm a direct descendant of on either side of my family was/is a farmer, as am I.

eta: After seeing the Billy Cannon talk, my grandfather on my mother's side was a football player at a smaller university and was on the team with one of Cannon's childhood friends. They hung out a few times during the offseason. Says he was a nice guy. All I've got.

My great, great grandfather on my Dad's side was the product of incest between two cousins circa 1860.

Strangely (or maybe not since it's LA), the same thing occurred around the same time on my Mom's side of the family tree.

There is also a Louisiana Governor on both sides of the family (different Governor and non-incestuous).

I recently found out I am related to this incestuous group in some way, though I am still trying to get the details.

quote:

Franklin Delano Roosevelt (the 32nd president) was a fifth cousin of Theodore Roosevelt (the 26th president). Genealogists have determined that FDR was distantly related to a total of 11 U.S. presidents, 5 by blood and 6 by marriage: John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Ulysses Grant, William Henry Harrison, Benjamin Harrison, James Madison, Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, Zachary Taylor, Martin Van Buren, and George Washington.

Although given the size of the group, I don't think this is particularly special.

I am a direct descendant of a protestant martyr burned at the stake by Mary I in 1555 for being against clergy member celibacy and getting married despite being a vicar.

My family walked to Utah pushing their belongings in handcarts. My great-grandfather had five wives. My family is referred to as "Mormon royalty" in a recent best selling book in Oprahs book club.
