Steven van de Velde, the Dutch beach volleyball player who served time in prison for having sex with a 12-year-old girl, received a mixture of boos and applause when he was introduced before losing his opening match on Sunday at the Paris Olympics. Van de Velde did not speak to reporters after the three-set loss to Italy, a break with a longstanding IOC policy. “He’s not here because he just wanted to rest his mind about it and just focus on the game,” said teammate Matthew Immers, who said he did not notice the crowd reaction.

I assume OMLandshark has made 3 posts about this already, but I just saw this and it is wild to me.

How does this happen?

How does a guy only serve 13months in prison for raping a 12yr old? wtf.

Dude should have his dick cut off at the very least.

The event isn't called "Beach volleyball players who are not rapists"

Yeah I obviously get why people don't like this. But at the same time, he did it, was convicted and served his time, and then did everything he needed to do to earn his way to the Olympics. So I also get why you can't really ban him from competing.

And the Karl Malone example is a good comparison outside of the fact that I don't think he's ever faced conviction for what he did. It's just sort of a well known thing that exists, and we're just supposed to be weirdly okay with it. Makes no sense.

I dont think people are struggling with the understanding of the rules bud. Were asking why a government is letting a dude rape a 12 year old and go back to a normal life, aside from the social stigma, 13 months later. It's so annoying when people are being dense in a moment where they feel smart.

Not a great example for a couple of reasons…1) as you stated, never charged or convicted; 2) a different time and place where it wasn’t really known or discussed until way after the fact.

Also, Karl Malone should have been tried and convicted and should be publicly shamed.

This.

He was sentenced to 4 years in the UK and when he was brought back to the Netherlands they adjusted the charge to match their guidelines and it was changed from rape to essentially sexual immorality.

Seems like this was a case of statutory rape. Although I'd argue at her age, she can't consent. Dutch laws must be fricked.

You sure about that? Because he just played in the Olympics.

I get what you're saying, and I even agree with it for the most part. But the courts in his country convicted him with that sentence and he served it. Would you feel differently if he had served 13 years and was now in the Olympics? The sentence itself is irrelevant to what I posted. I'm simply saying he did what he was sentenced to do and then earned his way to the Olympics, so I get why they let him play. Doesn't mean I agree that that he served a fair sentence or whatever.

Just thought of a better comparison. That pitcher from Oregon State. But his ending wasn't as happy as this vball player's.

Maybe slightly, but I don’t understand allowing a convicted child rapist to represent your country on the world stage. It’s a horrible look for the Dutch IMO and highlights the remarkable light sentencing guidelines.

People will never take this seriously because it sheds a light on culcha that people don't want to talk about. The Baby Daddy culture has been going on a very long time in some circles.

The Olympic committee (or whoever allowed this) could simply say, “we don’t send people convicted of sex crimes to the Olympics ever.”

He served his time but the Olympics aren’t part of the criminal justice system and are free to hold their own standards…and they should.

To be fair, the IOC probably condones it. It's impressive how they and FIFA sell their morals to the highest bidder.

Knowing the Netherlands- The 12 year old probably got more of a punishment than he did.

1968 silver medalist and 72 bronze winner for the united states was a serial child rapist in the early 80s. It took USA swimming 30+ years to permanently ban Mitch Ivey from coaching. For bonus points Mitch also straight up assaulted summer mcintosh's coach when he was just 15 or 16. Mitch hasn't done a day in jail for any of these things
