You also mentioned Central City. Sky Harbor and CityScape are in Central City, but the closest Costco is not very close at all to Central City.
CityScape looks awesome. If I had a job close enough to to live there, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Lots of good restaurants and bars nearby, numerous music venues, a comedy club, and 2 professional sports arenas a block or 2 away. Do it.

Bunch of companies are moving here. TSMC is building a huge semi-conductor plant in North Phoenix that is opening up I think in 2 years.
If you like the outdoors here, there is a ton of stuff to do.
Basically the weather is great for 9/12 months of the year. Summer is brutal, but you learn to live with it.

The biggest issue is going to be the (dry) heat. From around Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend, it will be 100+, typically somewhere between 100-110. On infrequent bad days, it can get between 110-115.
During July/August there are also monsoon storms which will keep the temperature down but will increase the humidity. There was one last night which is why the high for today will only be around 97.
But the rest of the year is very nice. During the winter months, while people in other states are shoveling snow, you'll be walking around in shorts and flip flops.
The cities on the east side (Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe, and Scottsdale) are the most desirable areas.
If you are into sports, Phoenix has all four major professional sports leagues. It also has Spring Training in March with 15 of the MLB teams. Phoenix has also hosted the Super Bowl many times, the Final Four in 2017, and the College Football Playoff National Championship in 2016. It will host the Super Bowl again in 2023 and the Final Four again in 2024. If you are into golf, the Waste Management Phoenix Open occurs every February. Not sports related but the famous Barrett-Jackson car auction occurs every January.
As with any major move, you should visit it in person before the move, keeping in mind that the summer months are the worst time to visit Phoenix.

I’ve lived a lot of places myself and overall I think the Phoenix area is my favorite.
A lot of this really depends on you and what you personally enjoy doing when not at work and how nice a living situation (house/apt) you want.
Anyone who says it’s only 2 bad months of weather doesn’t know what they are talking about. Middle of June through Halloween are generally HOT and usually there MAY be a week or two where it cools down some (in the low 90s). The other months are amazing weather. That said, summer almost everywhere gets pretty warm and at least here the humidity factor is beneficial. I prefer it. If you really want 3-4 distinct seasons this is not the place for you.
If you are die hard about being by water there are some lakes here for boat activities but not really close to where your work is located.
Food, professional sports, college sports, and entertainment is solid to great, outdoor activities are excellent to stellar.
You may make a lot more money but it won’t go as far here as your current setup. It’s really hard to know where you’d want to set up shop without knowing your general budget restraints and what leisure activities most interest you.
I’d lean towards the Biltmore area venturing about 5-10 mile radius from there for best location. Football season out here is amazing. Wake up, games start at 9am and all SEC games done by dinner. Then you can go out or watch PAC 12 if you want.
Let me know if I can help or offer more tips. Deep South vs Scottsdale area is a no brainer for me.

Lived up here from 09-21.
Lots to do at first, but that heat just became unbearable after a few years. From June to October, with very few exceptions, your face melts as soon as you step outside. It’s like that blast of air when you open an oven. Your first summer or two, you might feel alright about it. But they will stack up and start weighing on you. From late October to May, it’s spectacular. No complaints.
I-10 from 8am-6pm is a log jam. 101 is always busy. I-17 is a slaughtering ground. Everybody hauls arse. I avoided the loops and interstate as much as I could. Watch the local news and see how many traffic deaths they report. It’s pretty wild.
Everything is spread out. Driving from the west valley, say Surprise or Buckeye, to the east valley of Phoenix or Gilbert is an hour drive on a good day. There’s no privacy, either. Cookie cutter neighborhoods and 4+ million people packed into the metro. There are no suburbs anymore. From Mesa to Scottsdale to Surprise to Buckeye is all “Phoenix”.
It was nice for a while, but I got bored because there’s only so much to do, desert scenery gets old, and half the year you have to hide from the Sun. Crime also surged after Arpario was kicked out, immigrants poured over the fence and leftists invaded from Cali and Oregon.
I moved from there to south Alabama and I’m way happier for it. Good luck. To each their own.

Besides the heat it seems like an awesome place to live

Look South Scottsdale that is practically Tempe. Older complexes but still not a horrible area. You know how it is here….the bad areas are in random pockets
This where I lived when I was there back in '16-'17, officially Tempe just off Lake Tempe. Had a condo at a place called Camden Sotelo, it was nice but still pricey. I could see the top half of the ASU scoreboard from my balcony, it sucked for my pup because during football season the shoot mortar shells off for every TD scored by ASU...and if you know those PAC-12 teams that can be a lot! I think they put up 54 against OSU one eek and my dog wanted to kill herself...poor girl. But not a bad area if your work is near Sky Harbor and there is some more reasonably priced stuff around with access to anything you need. My work was on the other side of Phoenix and the commute sucked hard. Overall I enjoyed the area for the most part, nightlife was very fun. Yeah, there is truth to the dry heat stuff to where 95-100 degrees isn't as awful as the same in La, but way too much time for me over 100 that still really sucked. The silver lining is 8-9 months out of the year the weather is damn near perfect if you can deal with the 3-4 months of hell on earth. Best of luck!

Is there any talk of an impending water shortage?
I read the CO river which feeds that region is at historic lows and falling. Nearly all reservoirs for that region are at all-time lows
also read 4 states (AZ, CA, UT, NV) are in talks about which industries and cities get water

PHX sources water from Lake Mead, so I am sure they are frequently seeing water use restrictions.

Awful heat and traffic, and the place has little to no personality. If Phoenix was a color, it would be beige.

A word about culture. Most people in Phoenix come from somewhere else. A lot from California but also a lot from the upper Midwest. Think Wisconsin. Also a significant Hispanic influence. Point being it is not at all southern. Maybe you don’t care having lived all over, but currently being in the Deep South you might.
Two other items. Most people from California that move to Phoenix do it because they can’t afford California. That’s no criticism, but there is definitely a PWT vibe outside the rich areas of the city. Also I found the city to lack faith, there certainly isn’t a church on every corner. It can be found, but it’s not front and center like most of the south. Neither may be important to you……

I couldn’t take the summer heat and said no. There’s a large amount of positives for Phoenix, but that heat is unbearable for 3 months.
Places like Phoenix give me the creeps. Without electricity and a steady supply of trucks, 90% of that city would die in a week. How many people can survive 115F temp without AC?

One thing that struck me when I visited PHX in May was it never looked like the postcard pictures. Everything always seems to be in a haze

if you want to avoid the suburbs, you can find a nice place with a reasonable commute from uptown/north central, the biltmore/arcadia area, or if you want to shell out a bit of cash, paradise valley. i am uptown on central and glendale, with easy access to downtown, shops, restaurants, walking paths, riding paths, and trails. you can get more house in the suburbs, but even those are getting more expensive.
