Awesome city.

Hot AF in July and August.

everybody just goes to flagstaff, or the mogollon rim and white mountains, or san diego those months. it is really remarkable how the city empties out during the bad summer months.

Traffic also gets noticeably worse when the snowbirds arrive for the season

As a retired mailman whose mail volume increased significantly during the "snowbird" months, this cannot be stressed enough. Phoenix is snowbird central.

Yes, summer weather is brutal but as others have stated, places like Sedona and Flagstaff are close by. The weather and the topography change drastically as you escape the desert and go into the high country. Also, in those areas, you can do a nice little Route 66 trip.

Anyone who says it’s only 2 bad months of weather doesn’t know what they are talking about. Middle of June through Halloween are generally HOT and usually there MAY be a week or two where it cools down some (in the low 90s). The other months are amazing weather. That said, summer almost everywhere gets pretty warm and at least here the humidity factor is beneficial. I prefer it. If you really want 3-4 distinct seasons this is not the place for you.

It is really 3 months where it’s brutal.

Hot doesn’t mean terrible

I mean there’s a pretty big difference between 100 degrees with 10% humidity in Phoenix and 100 degrees in Louisiana with 98% humidity

PHX sources water from Lake Mead, so I am sure they are frequently seeing water use restrictions.

phoenix sources water from the salt river chain of lakes, which are at about 75 percent full. we have had a super wet monsoon season this year.

Phoenix is a "huge" city, in that it is very spread out.

It certainly is. When you say "Phoenix", that encompasses a massive geographical area. Scottsdale is different from Glendale which is different from Mesa/Gilbert/Chandler/Goodyear...you get the idea. I moved to Scottsdale in 1987 after grad school and have never had one regret. Close enough to drive to the beaches of CA (and a 1 hr flight) and two hours from skiing and snow in Flagstaff. Arizona is a stunningly beautiful state with tons of outdoor activities and all four major pro sports teams, if that's your bag. Obviously tons of transplants and for me the fact that there are a large number of Wisconsin Badger fans (at least four bars host Badger games, many more host GB Packer games) is a huge plus.

Let me help make your decision easier: go to Old Town Scottsdale or make the trek to the Buffalo Chip in Cave Creek (just north of Scottsdale) on a Friday night. If you are a male & single you will understand.

Two months are spent running from air conditioned building to air conditioned car. (I had covered parking at work and deep tinted windows, so it wasn't bad for me.) The other 10 months is virtual perfect, sunshine with no humidity and no mosquitos. If you enjoy the outdoors, there is virtually unlimited camping, hiking, etc. You can ski 4 hours north in Flagstaff and occasionally 2 hours south in Tucson. Beaches are 5 hours away. Plenty of lakes nearby for water sports.

There is a serious lack of good quality seafood. You can find it, but it's not abundant. Every other cuisine is well represented. The COLA is probably equivalent to Florida unless you lived in Miami.

We've lived in South FL, Tampa, Louisiana, Arizona and Texas. Tampa is probably #1 for us, but Arizona is a close second.

Plenty of podcasts and TV options that I never missed LSU or Saints games living there.

Also I found the city to lack faith, there certainly isn’t a church on every corner.

Some areas are more religious than others. Mesa and Gilbert are heavily Mormon...so much so that if you aren't Mormon, you probably wouldn't want to live and raise a family in those two cities.

I’m a big fan of the Phoenix area but god damn it’s hot as frick in the summer months (and that’s coming from someone that has lived in South Louisiana his entire life). It’s like being inside an oven.

Do it. It's a great place to live. It gets hot, but it's dry heat. It's really not that bad.
We were there in early June and it gets hot AF in the sun in the middle of the day but surprisingly cools down in the shade and at night with no humidity.

Ditto on do it.
