i'll never forget that experience b/c it told me right then and there that college would be easy as frick

You said bear perfect, hence the confusion.

The majority of the students were “professional students” who went to additional schooling after the regular school day and also went to tutoring sessions on Saturday.

Not professional students. While your kids are spending countless hours at practice and weekend tournaments for travel ball, those kids are involved with outside the class programs like Destination Imagination, coding classes, tutoring, and volunteering at Habitat for Humanity.

Seems like there's an incentive to not take AP classes to get that top 7% mark at a lower-ranked high school.

Generally an A equals a 5 for your GPA, B equals 4

That’s the incentive

There is a Facebook group in our area that counsels Parents here on maximizing and manipulating the scheduling process to get the highest possible GPA. One thing they do is take non-AP courses like PE online or their senior year to minimize the impact of non-5.0 courses on their transcript

I went to HS in Fort Bend ISD, and this was going on even back in the late 90s. I had several friends who were toward the top of our class that dropped out of electives like band or theater that they enjoyed because those classes, even with an A, would bring their GPA down.

I was accepted into LSU early and offered a scholarship, so I don't know how it would have gone with UT or A&M, but I'd have probably been in a similar situation as your daughter... my class rank was a bit lower but ACT a bit higher.

My understanding is Texas higher education is extremely competitive. Lot of applicants. Sounds like the high school your kids were at was built to max the paper qualifications of your kids (not that they don’t deserve it or that it’s not a good high school), but it’s still a bish to get in.

it's not where you start it's where you finish, my kids and a lot of their friends were exactly where you are a few years ago, take advantage of CAP and Blinn Team if your kids really want to go to UT or ATM, many kids that get accepted out of high school will bust out in the first year creating room for your kid, good luck...

Your kids were born the wrong skin color I'm afraid.

His kids should write black lives matter over and over again in their essays. Let admissions know they're not afraid to speak truth to power.

This is good advice. My son had a 3.7 average and 33 ACT, but did not get into UGA. He ended up going to Colorado on a partial scholarship. Didn't like it, transferred to North Georgia and is now at UGA.

The two options you listed sound like a good opportunity to get into UT or A&M without having to reapply

I tried to get my second son to check the "other" box on gender and/or "Questioning" on sexuality, but he would not do it for some reason. Idiot

Like I said originally, the kids were only active in academic extracurriculars like the robotics club. On top of that, they went from school to places like Kumon centers and not Habitat for Humanity. Saturday schools seemed to be segregated by nationality - one of my son’s friends called it “Korea School.” On Sunday, that particular family spent a good amount of time with their church and that’s awesome. I’m not judging but I’m saying that I didn’t want my kids to be exposed to that as early as elementary school. Just a personal choice.

I'm sorry but if 25% of the class has a 3.96 or better GPA then the school is really way too easy. That's ridiculous to have so many kids with such a GPA.
