That's not uncommon. I know three chemical engineers from Columbus, Ohio area who were tops in their HS classes but shunned by Ohio State and ended up at Dayton.
I went to a small public high school (120 ish per class) and a half a dozen students go to Ohio State every year. It was good school and all, but not uniquely exceptional. If they were shunned from OSU at the top of their class then they must have bombed the ACT, unless by shunned you're referring to scholarships/financial aid and not admissions.

You can’t compare a 4.3 at one school versus a 3.8 at another school. It could be apples and oranges regarding grade inflation. Standardized test scores are usually the top thing they look at. Then grades and extracurriculars.

I do agree the perecentage guideline sounds like something they need to change.

Also, has anyone in this thread ever heard of weighted and unweighted GPA?

You really think these admissions departments are complete idiots and go “4.2 GPA, holy shite, automatic genius, you’re in!” They know what they are doing for the most part.

Have them apply to West Point or Annapolis

Gaining admission to a military academy requires much more than filling out an application. You have to be nominated by a member of congress, or the vice president, pass a physical fitness test that requires above average fitness, pass a comprehensive medical exam, interview, and a lot more. If you have not started the process in your junior year of high school you are probably too late.

Something seems strange about a school where the top 25% all have about a 4.0 or higher.

I took 10 in high school 10 years ago. I am not surprised that that number is up to 15 or so now

I remember when I applied to colleges 10+ years ago they did not consider "honors" and AP classed as having higher weight.

It's stupid to take 'college' courses in high school...if you really need to know the material.

it's a bit different scale, but i graduated with a 96 in 2002 and didn't finish inside the top 20%. and we didn't allow 100+ scores. just a highly competitive class.

Why are you laughing? Each school has multiple majors above Ivy League schools

The Ivy League is the GOAT marketer. People think they are these unicorns on the quality of education. They are great at making connections is what they are great at

Where I graduated High School, that is likely how it was for us

The would mean 50 students made a 4.0, which I bet was pretty close to the case

A few things here. Texas has so many people there's not enough spots. The huge influx of Mexicans whether legal or illegal into Texas doesn't help as they need to be accepted less the universities being considered racist. You reap what you sow. Also, a 30 on the SAT is about average considering it's been dumbed down the last couple of years. As far as Texas "great" public schools, the truth is a government school is a government school and it teaches to the test with no other education needed. I prefer New Orleans catholic schools where not only will you score a 30+ on the ACT, you are well rounding in various languages like Latin (helpful for law and medical fields) and you actually are taught and learn MORALS and religion, social manners, etc...

and TAMU has it for Top 25%

I am not reading through what is likely a shitshow of a thread but I thought outside of top ten it had a scale for SAT or ACT scores to get auto admitted up to top 25%? Like if you’re in the top 22% you need to get a 1350 or something. That’s how it was when I graduated HS in 2007. Regardless CAP and Blinn team are great programs. Blinn team you get to live in the same town as A&M, so you still meet plenty of people at the school and there’s little adjustment when you eventually transfer over.

It’s insane.

Registering my son for 6th grade now and have his courses outlined all the way through high school to do our best to qualify. He’s enrolled in Pre-AP Match, Reading & Writing and next year will be the only year he will be able to take a “fun” elective as all those spots will be fillled with advanced classes to get a “jump” on high school and college credits. Crazy that we are thinking this far ahead to even have a chance.

Luckily, he’s a very bright, straight A student who requires very little study time so this is do-able for him. However, it certainly takes the fun out of middle school.
