It’s crazy. I have some friends who’s kids a very good athletes and students. Because of their commitment to sports their kids can’t load up on as many AP course as kids who play no sports. It makes it harder to compete for the few slots.

What’s also crazy are all the parents trying to feed into 3 main schools when they could go to one of the other schools Katy or Fulsher and have slightly less compatition.

Right. The problem is with those hard set percentages. Although it allows a lot of good students to go to schools like LSU...

Something seems strange about a school where the top 25% all have about a 4.0 or higher.

this area is affluent but not "rich"
more like upper middle class
but the demographics are very high for two income homes with college educated, professionals parents that highly value education for their kids

the school is 52% minority and only 6% disadvantaged

US NEWS Ranking on Tompkins HS for 2017

More School Data

Tompkins is about 3000 kids now with about 20% of the population Asians, 45% white, 24% Hispanic and 8% Black

for those saying this is an "easy" school, look at the test scores. what we have here in Cinco Ranch is a concentration of Asian/Indian kids with high achiever parents and a school with all of the best resources. The top 25% of the school is stout and they have a strong cultural drive to succeed in school.

This isn't grade inflation, so much as grade manipulation

I took 10 in high school 10 years ago. I am not surprised that that number is up to 15 or so now

there are several accredited AP courses that are online, most kids take them during the summer

My son's in 6th next year, but we don't have any choices with classes. He's going to an all boys school from 7-12 grades, and I'm not sure he gets to choose classes there. Not really worried about it.

Also, a 30 on the SAT is about average considering it's been dumbed down the last couple of years.

about average for what?

They'll take anyone from Texas while being strangely choosy when it comes to Louisiana citizens. LSU is a strange place.

Are they really "strangely choosy" with Louisiana residents? It's pretty easy to get into LSU even as a Louisiana resident. The average student admitted in 2016 had a 25-26 on their ACT and a 3.4 GPA

I am pretty sure you cannot do statics without a basic knowledge of trigonometry.

It's similar trying to get in to UGA and obviously GA Tech now. Not a snowball's chance in hell I would get in to UGA if I had applied today

Top 26% and 17% is pretty bad. Especially in public school where there are thousands of kids. And the fact that you thought that warranted a "not to brag" disclaimer is embarrassing in and of itself.

I say that as someone that got into both first try

Making all A's in high school with 10+ AP courses and scoring a 30, and 31 on the ACT is very good. This site has lost its fricking mind

Well yeah, typically the 11th grade. Not sure how long you've been out of college but at least in the past 5 years the amount of remedial / college "prep" math classes in the first year of college has grown. Luckily most engineering candidates test out of this or ACT is high enough to avoid.

I was able to jump into Cal 2 with my ACT score.

I think there were a few B's in the AP courses, but yea that's not bad for sure.

I know that
I was at West Point when the incoming class of 2018 came in during their r day and cadet basic training in the summer of 2014

That may be my only regret in life is not applying myself more in high school granted I am about to have three college degrees and a healthcare practitioner but our guidance counselor was terrible at my high school. This was late 90's

It just amazes me how much education has changed from grade point systems and such

pretty bad hunh? I will be sure to let them know how ashamed of themselves they should be based on the shotcaller1 life performance metrics. I only said not bragging to get ahead of the idiot chorus of "you are just starting this thread to brag about your kids"

However, it certainly takes the fun out of middle school.

I asked my son after he graduated if he had fun in HS.
he looked at me kind of weird and said "yeah why do you ask?"
I said "it seems like you had a sort of grim determination all through HS with concerns about scheduling, grades, watching GPA, stressing over class rank etc. Do you have any stories or memories you will remember and think fondly on from your time in HS?"

He said, "Hmmm, not really, we had a lot of fun doing projects and doing debate stuff, but when I think about school on those terms I dont have a whole lot of fun memories"

As a parent, that makes me kind of sad. Its like he had four years of HS Student Job and then he graduated. All I remember from my HS days is the fun we had.
