well he is skinny and not muscular.

I think it's just normalized behavior mixed with ignorance.
Jim is 225 and sees John who is 250 and thinks he isn't so bad. John sees Tim at 300 and thinks he isn't that bad off.
Tim tries to lose weight by eating a salad covered in ranch, croutons, and bacon and can't understand why the pounds aren't shedding off. Tim thinks he is active because he hunts and fishes whenever the weather allows and works around the house, so he just must be a big guy. Also, he tried to eat healthy and it's just unrealistic. Nobody can actually do that.
This is all fictional and in my head, I'm well aware.
It’s definitely what’s happening to many people. People’s perceptions on what constitutes being fat has changed through the decades and for the worse. A fat person in 1990 would be seen as normal today while a normal weighted person would be seen as skinny.
You see it frequently on this board too. Someone who is like 5’10 240 will claim they’d look “deathly ill” if they had to drop to 190 pounds. They most likely wouldn’t but they think they would because they’re not used to seeing slim (normal weight) people as much anymore.
There are people who are exceptions because of their fat and muscle distributions ( store a lot more weight in their lower body) or because they work out a ton. But most people don’t fall into this but will act like they do

I feel like most of this thread has talked about eating unhealthy food/being lazy, but THIS is the main problem with the fatties.
A very small portion of them probably drink >12oz water in a day. A lot of overweight people would see a big difference in their health if they'd simply drink more water and less soft drinks. I'm not saying you can eat fast food 3x/day & you'll be healthy if you drink water, but I think majority of America's overweight problem has to do with what they're drinking vs what they're eating.

You completely dismissing brain chemistry, satiety, and other signals of metabolic health is just as dumb as saying carbs are evil.
In a vaccum, yes it's CICO, but we aren't vaccums and our bodies perform dozens or hundreds of functions simultaneously.

The difference is that those people walk everywhere they go.
Those people live in the US too you know? Just like many Americans they have largely stationary lifestyles these days but still eat lots of rice everyday. They’re fatter compared to the people living in their home countries but they’re still not nearly as fat as compared to the rest of the country here.
The real difference is they’re still not eating as much food overall. I guarantee you their daily calorie intake is still lower. They don’t eat as much junk or processed foods.
Go to many other countries in the world and you’ll see the portion sizes people eat are much smaller compared to the US.

I'm almost 52, have a BP of 120/70, great cholesterol, no diabeetus, hearts in fantastic condition, and I can do 15 pull-ups - I think that's good enough physical condition. What else should I expect - if that's skinny - let me keep being skinny for the next 40 years.

Dr. Robert Lustig in his book METABOLICAL says that’s not true. Anyone still believes that seriously needs to read his book.
You know what doesn’t sell books?
Telling people they’re fat because they’re making poor decisions and lack self-discipline.
It’s the truth, but it ain’t gonna make you a NYT best-seller

yep, it's better for longevity to be lighter.

In the macro, it’s not genetics… it’s our diet more than anything imo
You can eat basically anything you want if you work out hard enough and you stay physically active enough. It’s the fact that people have an iPhone in their hands 24 hours a day 7 days a week being lazy as shite instead of doing something physical

They're also the reason why our healthcare is so expensive. Whether you're on medicare, medicaid, or private insurance you're still being subsidized by healthier, smarter, less lazier people. It's not "mUh fReEdOm" to be a fatass. You don't have a right to burden others.

My mind goes to the idea that our food system loads everyone with high fructose corn syrup.
Tell me what you know about high fructose corn syrup that isn't MSM pop science?
Just curious. I am always skeptical of the latest bugaboo in diets (that one isn't really new I guess).

But also is it laziness? Genetics?
Our bodies have a simple formula not unlike an engine. The most important part of the equation for weight is is you energy balance. Calories in vs calories out.
Exercise helps maintain that balance but what you eat is much more critical. Exercise also helps ramp up you base metabolism, both short term and long term potentially. Essential, your idle speed increases for a period of time after exercise (short term) and with regular exercise it it is the level you drop to after the short term uptick is higher than before you were regularly exercising (long term).
I think all this COVID BS really did a number on a lot of folks and it is worse now than pre COVID. I know it is for fat old man me. You fit baws need to pray for me to get a little incentive.

Most people eat like they’re some college athletes who need a shite ton of calories per day. But of course they’re not working out anything like them. It’s not like people in 1990 America were doing tons of exercise and that’s why they were so much thinner relative to today.
Let me also add that yes people in 1990 were more active but not nearly enough to explain the massive rise in obesity rates. A lot of adults still had to drive, not walk, everywhere. Hell the obesity rate in the last 10 years has gone up significantly. And 10 years ago we had smartphones and the internet everywhere.

The fat kids nowadays is sad. I mean there was always one fat kid in a crowd that just came from a long line of fatties but now like 50% of kids are fricking fat. That’s hard to achieve .

If a person were to eat a salad, absolutely no way to find a salad for $5. That's a salad without any dressing.
bullshite. Kroger has $5 pre-made salads; caesar, chef's, southwest, and two or three others. All include a packet of dressing. Same with Publix and other grocerie store deli areas. Often have $5 wraps and club sandwiches too. Eating healthy maybe takes slightly more effort, not money but there is a good reason fat and lazy go together.

I know. It really caught my eye when I hired a personal trainer and started a diet. I am skinny but have a gut that puts me in the dad body category. It actually pissed me off that people let themselves get like that
I think a big problem is that everyone wants the most for the cheapest price. If I can get a triple cheeseburger with large fries and a coke at 5 guys, why pay double for salmon and kale salad, when the burger is more filling and tastes better? I think the majority of American people have that mindset.

Currently in Spain.
There are few obese people here. It’s also rare to see old people using walkers. Canes yes.
They walk a lot. Many of them bicycle a lot.
And one the OT will love. The left lane is for passing only. Make your pass and move to the right is mandatory and is followed.
I’m also amazed that in the cities six cars will fit into three lanes at a turn and they all manage the turn without bumping into each other and with zero road rage and honking.
