It's not that easy. Attribution is the most difficult aspect of a cyber attack. They could even openly say "yes we did this", but if you can't tie them to a physical location or IP address, you've got nothing. And this being a professional ransomware outfit, they've likely covered their tracks very well.

That's not what I am saying. I'm saying the FBI can't just go walk over to DarkSide and crack them on the skull. It takes time. meanwhile Colonial would like to get back to business and stop losing massive amounts of money. So, they pay the ransom. I think people assuming nothing is being done or those government agencies aren't interested is a big assumption you don't have anywhere near the knowledge to make.

I work in network security and the majority of the public have no idea how many entities shortchange technology because the departments have to go with lowest bid or just don’t even get budget for stuff...
or xyz department wants to turn in a service and don’t foot the bill for storage, backup, and security.
When I was working for a school, curriculum would show up with a CD and say “we bought this software for the computer labs. Can you put it out there for kids to start using?”
Did you buy a server, storage, Microsoft CAL, extra license for server security and storage space for me to back it up?
