Since the economic crisis of 2008, the pattern of undergraduate majors has been shifting across American higher education. Of all the major disciplines, history has seen the steepest declines in the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded. In 2008, the National Center for Education Statistics reported 34,642 majors in history; in 2017, the most recent year for which data are available, the number was 24,266. Between 2016 and 2017, the number of history majors fell by over 1,500. Even as university enrollments have grown, history has seen its raw numbers erode heavily. The drops have been especially heavy since 2011–12, the first years for which students who saw the financial crisis in action could easily change their majors; of all the fields I’ve looked at (Fig. 1), history has fallen more than any other in the last six years.

The fact that people actually put themselves in thousand of dollars worth of debt for these degrees is mind boggling.

Not surprised. History is fluid nowadays anyway.

You used to be able to find stable white-collar work with these degrees.

Hopefully, the next generation can learn from the current one and treat college as an investment, not a human right and necessity.

"There should be a universal basic income so that people are free to pursue their passions!" - People who do as you mentioned.

I used to study in a hipster coffee shop during residency. I heard this sentiment by more than one person.

That seems like a good thing. Seeing as how a history or religion degree is pretty much useless, it makes sense that those types of programs would have dwindling numbers.

UNO requires engineers to take Literature so they can justify having a Literature Department. There aren't enough students taking it, so they force people to

I have a history degree and a great paying job in insurance. I had my job with a fortune 50 company literally calling me to offer me a job as I finished my last final. That was 10 years ago and I’m doing just fine.

Same for most universities.

I think it's time society just accept that trade school should be the default path for most people.

Why is this? My youngest is currently in a Lab Science program at Utah. I don't think he ends up there, but curious as to your reasoning.

Isn't that pretty standard at most schools? All students regardless of major have to take some general ed courses.

I still had to take a sophomore level literature class.
