And if you also had a house at Gulf Shores, you would say " I have a house at the lake and a house at the beach." You wouldn't say " I have houses at two beaches."

I have a house on a lake at Gulf Shores

If it ain’t by an ocean/sea/gulf then it ain’t a beach, plain and simple. As someone who lives near the ocean, near rivers, and near lakes, no one has ever said “I’m going to the beach” in this state and meant anything other than a sandy area touching the Atlantic Ocean. And yes there are sandy areas beside the lakes (lakeshore) and rivers (riverbanks/down by the river) here too.

Leave it to a Bama fan to be too stupid to realize that lakes can have beaches.

The people responsible for the actual definition of words disagree with you.

As long as you aren’t trying to tell me they suddenly CNN and its ilk are concerned with the actual definitions of words.

The amount of people in this thread that dont understand the difference between THE beach and A beach is hilarious.

Yes, we've all decided that the locations are the river, the lake, and the beach (meaning gulf or oceanside).

But there is a beach at all of those places. Go to Fontainebleau State Park and tell me Lake Pontchartrain doesnt have a beach. Here is a description pulled from the site "Lakefront park with a beach & trails"

Michigan has some pretty lake beaches. Greers Ferry lake in Arkansas is one of the prettiest lakes in the SEC as a region.

The only beach we went to on ouachita was extremely rocky and hard to even walk across.

In Arkansas and Oklahoma, the best looking water in lakes is next to beaches that are broken up chert (the worse) and sandstone- some aren't painful.

If the lake is surrounded by soil, that soil is going to leave the water murky.

Now if you could time travel back to the Cretaceous, then you'd have some really fine beaches and reefs in the southernmost part of both states.
