re: CNN - it was “unfortunate” that cadets weren’t actually racist

the cadet should probably be punished not for lying, but for insensitivity to himself, then he should sue the academy for being subject to his own actions.

People are so fricking stupid. It's pretty clear what she meant. This is just like the people that were outraged at how Trump was feeeding fish in Japan. Their minds are made up beforehand, and take whatever bit out of context to show how evil CNN or Trump is. But if you just use a little bit of brain power and look at the context it's pretty easy to see how much of a non-issue this is.

I don't really believe this. Most racist folks just don't do blatant shite like write racist things on walls. They are just casually racist with their buddies and whatnot.
It seems to me most of the "evidence" to support this fearmongering of epic proportion is anectodal. The fear is totally out of line with reality

bro just because they didn't announce the guy wasn't kicked out of the academy doesn't mean he won't be.
but I do agree he should be charged with a hate crime, if by definition alone.

a crime motivated by racial, sexual, or other prejudice, typically one involving violence.
Whether you believe in hate crimes or not is irrelevant, because they do exist in our legal system.

Probably.
He should be kicked out because making up false instances of racism is unbecoming of an officer in the USAF.
We will see what happens. I don't think this is over yet.

Hate crimes are ridiculous.

I'm simply going by what I know. Most of the white dudes I know/knew growing up are pretty casually racist.
Then again I think everyone has a little racism in them, for the most part. Some of it is simple human nature, IMO.

how is this your logic?
Because actual racism and bigotry would be worse than someone faking it for attention. I don't see how damaging the credibility of racism victims in the future is as bad as actual racism. Again I'll compare it to someone faking their own death and framing someone for it. Almost as bad as murder maybe but not quite.
quote:
Real victims of blatant racism should be livid. The last thing we need in race relations is folks looking at these events as "the boy who cried wolf".
I'd argue that the last thing we need is actual racism and bigotry, and maybe the second to last thing we need is people faking it and eroding trust in people who might experience it in the future. Not sure how this is controversial.

A lot of people confuse prejudice and racism

Pretty sure he was already kicked out. He was only in prep school, not at the Academy yet.

Quite a stretch.
It could be unfortunate that some pathetic soul has to stoop to the level of faking things like this.
I thought that when I read the title, but then I watched the video. She certainly looks disappointed that it was all fake.

I hate CNN as much as everyone else but this is a nothingburger

Eh. Only because they don't go both ways. That guy in the pink shirt in baton rouge a few years back comes to mind. He was beaten for being in the "wrong neighborhood" but it wasn't a hate crime.

not the point and I addressed this line of thinking. I agree, but we don't get to choose, so better get over it.
Hate crimes are written into law, period.
By definition, this cadet committed one. Mick is right. If they would have charged a white kid with a hate crime it shouldn't be any different for the black kid.

Arrested on what grounds?
Also, the perpetrator was kicked out of school.

The Air Force Academy said in a written statement Tuesday: "We can confirm that one of the cadet candidates who was allegedly targeted by racist remarks written outside of their dorm room was actually responsible for the act. The individual admitted responsibility and this was validated by the investigation." The academy also said the student who wrote the racist slurs is no longer enrolled at the school.
