but the point is that for the same crime, a white kid would be charged with a hate crime, no matter your opinion on hate crimes

How is that thought crime? An action is taken. Writing go home n word isn't a thought, it's an action.

"thinking" about racist things isn't a crime. Actually writing them down in a public place with a clear intention is.
I agree hate crime should just be crime. But you certainly can act out on that hate.

What is truly unfortunate, is that they have known it was a hoax since about a week or less after it happened. Why did they wait a month and a half to break the news?

acting out on that hate is an action. And that is why this crime has this particular name. You can argue the semantics on what to call it all you want, but it doesn't make you right.
you have a thought, hate.
then you commit a crime based on those thoughts.
it's just a way to assign a crime to acting out on racism.
