CNBC: Ford is basically giving up on the US car business

I think the two largest and most respected American car companies are making a mistake with this new strategy. A refocusing towards more popular models may be in order, but abandoning the most affordable and most fuel efficient vehicle segments leaves them vulnerable when energy prices climb.
Discontinued:
Chrysler 200
Slated for discontinuation:
Ford Fiesta
Ford Fusion
Ford Taurus
Lincoln MKZ
Lincoln Continental
Chevrolet Sonic
Sedan models rumored to be phased out or merged with other models within 5 years:
Chevrolet Impala
Buick LaCrosse
By 2022, 97% of Chrysler's lineup, 90% of Chrysler's lineup, and 84% of General Motor's lineup will be crossovers or SUVs.
Chevrolet has cut one of the 3 shifts for the Cruze sedan at its Lordstown, OH plant and move some Cruze hatchback production to Mexico.
Ford has opted to discontinue Focus production in North American entirely and import the new model from China.
Both companies seem to be using this reshuffle as an opportunity to cut manufacturing capacity in the US and outsource production.

So is it really the end of cars in North America?
From the way Detroit's major executives are talking, it would seem so.
Ford said on Wednesday it will only offer two new cars in North America over the coming years — its iconic Mustang, and the Focus Active, a rugged-looking hatchback that has already debuted in Europe, and that is styled like a rugged wagon, much like the Subaru Crosstrek or Buick Regal TourX.

"Virtually eliminating Ford's NA car portfolio makes a lot of sense, in our view," said Adam Jonas, an analyst at Morgan Stanley. "No more Fusion. No more Focus. No more Fiesta. No more Taurus."
GM still makes quite a few cars. For now, Chevrolet alone still sells somewhere around 12 cars if you count Corvette, although there have been rumors and news it will cut or end production of at least some of those. Buick has some sedans and a crossover that looks a lot like a wagon, and Cadillac has so many sedans industry observers and dealers say it missed the crossover trend.

So sedans and other cars are expected to still form more than a quarter of all consumer vehicle sales in the U.S., but the overall trend appears to be to be that American companies especially are giving up trying to sell cars to Americans.

It does make you wonder what will happen when gas goes back to $4 per gallon. I remember a lot of people selling their SUVs and trucks when that happened. It was costing me over $100 to fill up my Ram

Who knew Ford was a German car company?

I think they are making a big mistake doing away with the Taurus.

Good. frick most of the American car manufacturers. Japan makes a superior product at the moment.
Shouldn’t have bailed them out in 08 and made those frickers go back to the drawing board

I have a Ford Escape as rental this week, maybe they should expand what they're discontinuing.

I just don't know anyone who would drive a Taurus over an Accord.. not that it means the Taurus is a crappy product, its just the stigma.

Finally.
Ford needs to make trucks and mustangs, and let everyone else fight over the sedan market. I like the idea of an Outback competitor, instead of $60,000 for an Ooutback I think plenty of people would pay $30k for a Ford version.

And a lot of the gas stations pumps would max out at $50 or $75 and you would have to make two transactions at the pump to fill up.
To the OP, is Ford building German cars now?

This isn't a Trump problem. This is an idiotic car company problem. You make shitty cars and then wonder why nobody buys them. They make GREAT trucks and SUVs. They SUCK DICK at cars. Honda, Toyota, Nissan and hell even Hyundai make better cars than US manufacturers. There is a reason they had to get a bailout when gas went up. If gas goes up again they will totally belly up with this strategy.

same shite will happen again. People will buy Accords or Camries. Then when energy prices decline, they'll sell those sedans in favor of the PU or SUV. Circle of life.

Why do they even make cars? They're embarrassing to drive and you can't haul shite with them
ETA: gas will never get expensive again now that we have a president who's a man instead of a little bitch. Drill baby drill!

It stung at the time because I lived 25 miles from my job. I live 4-5 miles from it now so I don't really care if gas goes back up.
