I like the idea of an Outback competitor, instead of $60,000 for an Ooutback I think plenty of people would pay $30k for a Ford version.

The accord will last forever and Honda has figured out how to make their hybrids cheaper and fit into the accord body. It's game over for damn near everyone else except Toyota.

GM and Ford never learn....it's not a matter of IF gas prices go back up, but when.

I think the two largest and most respected American car companies are making a mistake with this new strategy.

No they aren't. The Japanese manufacturers pretty much own the sedan market. None of Ford's current sedan lineup really sells well, so its a smart move by them to focus on whats performing well for them...trucks, SUV's and Mustang. Supposedly Ford is bringing back the Ranger and Bronco, so it makes sense for them to divert resources to those models instead of sedans that aren't selling.

Even the Japanese sedans aren't doing that well here. CUV and the like offer nearly the same fuel economy and more utility which is appealing across the range of vehicle buyers. A lot of retirees are buying them in place of 4-door luxury sedans. Road trips, golfing...hell of a lot easier to load up a SUV than a sedan. I'll never buy a sedan of any type, simply don't offer the utiliy of a SUV or a truck.

The seeds for the failure of the American auto companies were sown in the 80s. As a newly graduated student I got a real job and bought a new GM sedan. Total crap, left me stranded multiple times. Traded it in 18 months later on a Ford Taurus. Three transmissions later I traded it in on a truck.

The shift away from Sedans isn't just impacting Ford. Ford is just the most glaring example of giving up. They did this as their Fusion was still a popular vehicle.

For the Japanese, there are other struggles. Supposedly this is the last generation of the Nissan Maxima in the US.

Toyota has had to push low margin fleet sales to move Camrys. Their own RAV4 crossover now outsells the Camry handily.

Subaru's Outback is now vastly more popular than the Legacy sedan on which it is based.

Even the new Honda Accord has had a difficult launch, though it still appears to be the retail favorite in its class. To their credit, their new Civic is an undisputed home run.

Not arguing against that. Chevrolet and Toyota are eating their lunch in the mid sized truck market. They had to do something.

I just think it's unwise to abandon what still is a pretty big market, as a hike in fuel prices will send customers back into more fuel efficient vehicles.

They have not invested in the Taurus in a while. I'd definitely get the Impala, Avalon, or Maxima over the Taurus today.

But the Taurus was a very competitive product when this generation was introduced.
