Unless the person around you is over the age of 70 and in poor health (who I hope would have a mask on), there's really nothing for anyone to worry about?

Seatbelt and helmet laws are 100% about insurance company profits. The insurance lobby is arguably the most powerful in the nation. Law enforcement certainly use it, but is all about insurance dollars.

The anti-mask crowd really crystallizes the mass stupidity and lack of respect in our society.

Bit different.
I always fought seat belt laws and I support masks.
Masks keep me from spreading MY germs which could harm you. That is why the courts have held up the mandates. Masks are constitutional. Now if you are being made to wear them outside or when no one is around then that could be definitely challenged.
Seat belts don’t keep ME from injuring you.

No because seat belts actually work. On the other hand , if someone doesn't want to wear and fly out the car, then that's their problem.

The fact we can smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol until our liver stops working but we are forced to wear a seatbelt is interesting to me
Or that seat belts are a law but motorcycles with no seatbelts are ok

Cute, now do the one where the mask nazi spits on a person, or the woman who yells at a woman's kids and says she hopes they die.

Insurance is a big part of this that you are missing.
1) if I hit your car, whether you wear a seat belt or not does effect me personally. My liability is effected by the choice that you make.
2) to not require seat belts by riders and standard safety features on car manufacturers, you begin to open a legal loophole where the victim is responsible for the severity of the injuries. This isnt much different than a victim choosing to drive drunk or texting while driving.
It is that loophole (which would be encouraged by lawyers because it increases their value in court) which is closed by insurance company lobbyists with regulations on driving.
For the record, I am against mandates on masks although I wear them and laugh at the extension of "dont tread on me" aimed towards private businesses and individuals encouraging safe and sanitary behavior.

Maybe some of us are from other countries, or have family in other countries, that don't even recommend masks due to the lack of evidence that they are effective.
Am I required to listen to Fauci just because I am American? Or can I listen to the Dutch/Norwegian/Icelandic/Swedish/Finnish Dr. Fauci's who say the evidence that masks work is insufficient and that they may actually cause more spread?

If the victim isn’t wearing their seatbelt, they are absolutely responsible for the severity of the injury and should be held legally responsible for it.

Any adult should not have to wear a seatbelt by law. Only children imo.
Nobody should be forced to wear masks either. A free society means individuals can choose to do what they want and suffer any consequences from it. Not the Govt job to protect us from ourselves

I remember being a kid around the time the State of LA finally decided to start enforcing seat belt laws, and these same folks were decidedly against it. They were removing seat belts from their cars, buying fake shoulder strap belts to be worn while driving, and were generally convinced this was an egregious overreach by the government which must be stopped.
I was old enough to remember this and no one was buying fake straps, etc.
One of the reasons given by the people who favored seat belts was that it would reduce insurance costs. How’s that working out?
Driving is a privilege; free assembly is a right. Courts have ruled that other rights fall under the “my body my choice” phrase. Owners of private property or businesses are welcome to make their requirements but the push to wear masks in public or even in your own home? Nah

Sure, but I can't see CV-19 flying at me going 65 mph pulling a load of pulpwood.

I feel that the point you are missing is the seatbelt law is a law. It was passed by people that were elected to their positions in the proper manner. Mandates are not the same thing. They are trying to achieve the same goal but not going through the proper channels
