China virus masks opponents fought mandatory seat belt laws 35 years ago

Had the misfortune of spending time with elderly family and their friends today. Misfortune because I couldn't find an excuse sufficiently worthy to get out of it.
Anyway, I had a déjà vu moment from my childhood while hearing them complain about the current masking movement ("muzzling" as they put it). I remember being a kid around the time the State of LA finally decided to start enforcing seat belt laws, and these same folks were decidedly against it. They were removing seat belts from their cars, buying fake shoulder strap belts to be worn while driving, and were generally convinced this was an egregious overreach by the government which must be stopped.
Obviously there are differences here--not insignificantly that the mask wearer doesn't protect himself but others. With the seat belt issue, the wearer was the only one affected.
Obviously (I guess) these folks eventually got over the seat belt issue. AFAIK, they all now wear them as an accepted part of navigating public highways. But, a muzzle? That's different. "Don't want no gubment telling people what they have to wear, gotdammit."

Debatable, unless its N95 or equivalent.

It’s possible to be an ardent Trump supporter and conservative, believe we are overreacting to the virus, and still wear a mask when at the store just in case the experts are correct and because it truly doesn’t hurt to wear it for a few minutes once or twice a week. Why so many can’t understand that, I’ll never know.

Seatbelt laws and helmet laws are also dumb
Same with forcing businesses to not allow smoking
The fact we can smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol until our liver stops working but we are forced to wear a seatbelt is interesting to me

I had the misfortune of clicking on this thread

This is a moronic comparison and you even explained why in your OP, yet you still hit submit.

You think seatbelt laws are passed to save lives? They're passed to give cops broader latitude and more justification to conduct a Terry stop and search your vehicle.

Does the seatbelt protect you or does it protect others? Is driving a right or a privilege? Is breathing a right or a privilege? Can you tax action or inaction? Why did we have to have a constitutional amendment to enact the income tax? Was that only for taxing income and not inaction, such as not purchasing health insurance? Why did we have to have a constitutional amendment to ban alcohol? Is marijuana any different than alcohol? WHY DON'T PEOPLE LOOK AT THE CONSTITUTION THE SAME WAY THEY DID 100 YEARS AGO?

I would give anything to spend time with my Grandpa (nursing home), don’t take time with your loved ones for granted
I’m not ashamed to say I’m tearing up missing him & I talked to him earlier

Wrong, just a nice kicker for a really dumb post, how low is your IQ?

this shite is getting old. slackster’s bullshite thread, now this.
The majority of the country is masking.
Wear a mask. Don’t wear a mask.
The OT doesn’t GAF. Take you bullshite elsewhere.

Wow. You sound like an incredibly shitty person. A huge count too, since you need a “sufficient excuse” to avoid doing things you don’t want to do.
If you weren’t such a pussy, you simply not go to the gathering. Oldsters would probably prefer if you weren’t there too. Sure you pouted and eye-rolled all day. They likely laughed at what an immature bitch you are behind your back.

Damn right. I wear my seat belt because it’s the smart thing to do, not because it’s legislated. I don’t wear a mask because I believe it does more harm than good.
See, we can think for ourselves. I miss the concept of survival of the fittest.
