I think the key word here is law. Did the Governor just go ahead and mandate that people wear seatbelts or did the legislators pass a bill which was then signed into law with clear enforcement and authority.

Goddamn you guys take this shite too seriously. It’s a message board, and I posted a simple observation that the same coots who opposed seat belt laws a few decades ago now oppose mask wearing.
I personally don’t have an issue with private businesses requiring masks, but governmental agencies mandating masks has me concerned.
Also, maybe I’m just a little pissed that we’ve got family members so entrenched in their opposition to masks that we have to do their Walmart trips for them—they will NOT wear a mask for any reason, even for going to the doctor or to church. “A matter of principle,” they say.
Irregardless (as Frank Maraist would say), I’m heading off to sex Ms. FCP then get a few hours of sleep before heading back to work. I’ll leave it to you highly educated folks to figure out life’s conundrums.

The people who fought against seatbelt laws were right then and the anti- mask people are right now.
This type of overreach is exactly what has led us to restricted shite like limits on soft drink sizes or no plastic straws.
Nibbling away at freedom has been a goal of the left for a very long time.

I don’t think you get IT. People weren’t against it because is might save lives. People were against it because they feared what happens when you give the govt a legal avenue into your car or home. It starts with seat belts, and morphs into emissions standards, fuel millage standards and a mountain of other govt regulations... the mask is no different. Once govt has its foot in the door to regulate personal behavior, you’ll never get them out.

What you don't seem to understand is the risk difference and the effectiveness of both. I've had covid and barely felt sick. I've survived two car cashes solely due to a seat belt. I gladly wear a seat belt due to the danger of car crashes. Covid has a 99.999% survival rate for my age group. The average age of a covid death is about 78-80 with almost every single one having at least one other health condition.

Let’s assume that masks do prevent me from spreading the virus, I would argue that seat belt laws are more egregious than the mask order.
The mask order protects others from me, the seatbelt protects only me. I don’t agree with the government implementing laws and/or orders to protect me from myself. The same can be said for helmets.

Nowhere in the constitution does it say the federal government can require masks. It does say that all
other powered not stated in the constitution are afforded to the state. Therefore, a state can make a mask mandate as long as the state’s constitution/laws allow.
Ponder this: education is not stated anywhere in the constitution, so is federal education unconstitutional?

Seatbelt laws are dumb and an over each by the government to generate tickets.
People should wear their seatbelts. Not doing so is idiotic.
Whether you are, or are not, wearing a seatbelt should be used as evidence in civil suits.

I'm not a extremist nut, but seat belt laws do make me worry about what all they could require of law abiding people.
First thing I do when I get a new truck is flip through the manual until I find the instructions to turn off the seat belt alarm. They hide them in there like a damn Where's Waldo book.
