I’ve done business in China since they were all wearing blue Mao suits riding bicycles and this is very true. But you’d be surprised what they do have technology wise.

If your company is in the technology side of the O&G biz, say geophysics or high pressure drilling or production, they’ve got your tech docs and drawings. Just ask your IT executive. But they can’t get export licenses for the good stuff from the U.S. or Euros.

The drive from Beijing to electronics factories sixty kilometers south is like going through Kansas corn fields, a company in Sakhalin Island has very sophisticated geophysical acquisition and processing gear they bought from an American in Singapore, Harbin up north is swarming with Russians in the drilling business, has a Wild, Wild West vibe.

My J.V. driver in Shanghai was NFL linebacker size, rare there, whose English was barely passible until he was out of my hearing range when it became perfect. We paid phd engineers and physicists $700 a month, half went to the government.
