I tend to agree with you. Not only do the Chinese have better ways to collect data they want, but our own government would likely give them whatever they asked for anyway. This is more about optics and testing the response of the US government.

I love the concept that a bunch of message board hacks are experts at the concept of shooting down a high altitude weather ballon

And you see absolutely nothing wrong with this thing staying afloat above nuclear sites lol

The balloon is (vaguely) over Billings, which is the biggest city in MT, about 120,000 people. Granted, there's not much of anything around Billings, so if it landed in the hinterland, no big deal, but there's a nonzero chance that it would come down in downtown Billings, and that would be a bad day.

That’s why they aren’t shooting it down. They know its location and will land it where they want and take what they can from it. Shooting it down just blows it to pieces that can’t be used.

99 Decision treat
99 ministers meet
To worry, worry, super scurry
Call the troops out in a hurry
This is what we've waited for
This is it boys, this is war
The President is on the line
As 99 red balloons go by

99 knights of the air
Ride super high-tech jet fighters
Everyone's a superhero
Everyone's a Captain Kirk
With orders to identify
To clarify and classify
Scrambling the summer sky

Geosynchronous satellites are not low orbit satellites, so you will never get close to the same quality of pictures or sigint as you do with low orbit satellites. This is why spy planes, and apparently spy barroons, exist

So if risk to civilians were an issue why not shoot it down before it crossed into continental land? I'm sure it was detectable before then or was it not?
Has this been answered already?

Its over billings now....it was launched in China....and flew over Alaska. Its not like we just now found out, they should have shot it down over fricking Alaska.

I think we need to take it down but in a way that we can still analyze it in a secure environment.
No such thing as “civilian” stuff in China. Their government owns every corporation.
