Also, in many roles you can get stuck doing the same thing for years and never learning anything new. Who wants to do that?

I left my last job because of that. When it was a mom and pop operation I worked in a lot of different areas and learned a lot. After mergers and acquisitions they centralized a lot of functions so it became a dead end job. Also started with corporate BS so I peaced out.

Is this just the norm these days? Looking at Linkedin and most people are averaging a job every couple of years. I would blame it on low paying jobs but most are management positions.

People are leaving for 10-20% raises while internally companies are giving 2-7% raises.

I will say I received a job offer after a promotion last month, and my company matched and I happily stayed.

Hell of a lot of companies with signing bonuses bringing people on… but speak the words “retention bonus” in a leadership meeting and report back on the reaction, right?

That companies are eager to pay for outside talent while letting reliable workers walk

People quit working with bad leaders

I've had some pretty lackluster leaders throughout my entire career, but haven't ever really considered quitting because of it.

I left my last job primarily because of a horrible boss. I got a small ($3500) raise, but I would have left for the same pay in a heartbeat. If it had been a pay cut I would have done some debating.

In the end I an so much happier with work, though, which makes a huge difference in general quality of life.

saw an interesting quote the other day. It read, "People do not quit jobs, they leave toxic cultures."

Sounds like some asshat motivational speaker rationalizing why people can’t stay at a job for any length of time. He should’ve just said people are always trying to better their position. “Toxic cultures” is a rather subjective term. The people being toxic never seem to think the environment is bad at all. And given the number o f people who job hop, it’s rather disingenuous to allege all those workplaces are toxic.

Corporate loyalty died and so did employee loyalty. It is rare to find companies that are good places to be for years on end.
Bingo. These companies dont give a shite about me, why should I give a shite about them? I find a better opportunity, I take it.

That is what I always tell younger staff, the firm doesn’t give a shite about you and if need be would cut your arse to save a budget. So always be selling yourself building relationships and if the offer is right take it.

I’ve been at 4 firms and each time I left I’ve gained money and responbilities. It’s also notched my resume having some of things I’ve done.

If you are doing a good job for yourself you understand the market and when to leave vs when to stay.

It’s an employee driven market currently and even with a recession looming I think it stays that way thanks to loss of labor during covid.

I'll put my head through a wall if I have to get up and do the exact same task for 4 years.
Some folks are wired differently, I’ve had the same exact job description for the past 12 years and every day is still a challenge and intriguing to me.

Granted, I’m at the top of the food chain and have great control over my work world and the work/home dynamic but I’m still engaged and “on” at all times.

I’ve never considered being unsatisfied with my work situation because it’s always been at least good or better.

I guess I was fortunate to find something that fit my personality and strengths well?

I was at my previous employer for a very long time. I was grossly underpaid. I left for a 58% raise. I loved the culture and the benefits were great but 58% is 58%

I think we have a crisis of bad middle management across most industries currently.

The culture of paying you less 58% less than your worth is pretty terrible, and there is no better benefit than a fair pay check.

If you are talking electrical engineers or software engineers, it's the norm. They move around to project to project and they are in demand.

Also in terms of loyalty. It flows both ways. If corporate America wants them to stay, they have to reward them or they will seek other places. There was a neighbors kid who is an electrical engineer apply for a job in the New Orleans area for a position. The best offer he got down here was 95,000.00. Interviewed with a defense contractor up in Raleigh and was offered 140,000.00 with a government clearance. So guess where he went?

I’ll be honest. The longest job I kept was 3 years so far. Been in the work force since 2015. I have also tripled my salary since then and in talks with a company that would make it quadruple. frick your pizza Friday X company, I want the money. I will climb till I can’t anymore.

I’m also now project base. They would easily extend after, but so would a lot of people. Not too many ride and show estimators out there.
