Several public schools in Baton Rouge will have new start times this fall as part of an effort to better match when children learn with research on their sleeping patterns. Prismatic Services, an educational consulting firm based in Charlotte, North Carolina, is recommending that middle and high schools push back their start times until at least 8:30 a.m., and that elementary schools start earlier, at 8 a.m. The idea is to pick one or two sets of schools that follow the same feeder pattern from elementary to high school. Superintendent LaMont Cole said he is still identifying which schools he would like to take part in the pilot program and their respective start times. He plans to bring the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board a list, likely in June, for its approval. Cole said a few principals have expressed interest in changing start times and are reviewing the idea internally. He said he also plans additional engagement with affected schools.

The pilot program will only affect a few schools. I know the OT Ballers around here all send their kids to Catholic, but if this goes district-wide, private schools will be affected as well.

pushing back 25 minutes will do nothing

our tax dollars going to consultants

they'd be better off with a financial incentive for the kids to take school seriously

So how is this going to work with parents with jobs?

Yeah, the kids starting later is not really the issue that people are having a hard time getting on board with

It looks like they want to move away from the one-size-fits-all approach and focus on feeders. The problem is that the magnet programs negate this. There are no true feeder schools anymore. If they want to fix the bus issues, they need to do away with the dozens of magnet programs and go back to two or three schools, like it was in the 90s.

The other issue is that they will make all of these changes while a bill for Saint George is being considered. If that passes, all bets are off and more money will have to be spent.

I don’t mind it. Some kids are out waiting for the bus as early as 6am and it seems like this is what they’re trying to change.

It sucks for the 5 families in all of EBR public schools that fit that criteria.

So would elementary get out earlier than the high school kids? Kinda sucks if older siblings watch the younger siblings after school

So they are going to get to school at 7:45 like normal b/c people work and then have to wait around for 45 minutes now instead of 15 minutes for school to start?

If your tired at school, how about you just go to bed earlier dumbasses? Instead of inconveniencing every working parent, how about you start the day off with some type of physical activity to wake the kids up.
We've been getting through school just fine for the last few decades starting at 7:30. Stop letting your kids stay up until 10-11 oclock.
My kid gets up at 6:30 and gets dressed quickly so he can go outside and shoot basketball with his friends until it's time to go. I, as well as everyone else in my neighborhood growing up did the same thing.

Go to Walmart(if you dare) or anywhere else in public after 10:00 on a weeknight. Kids are everywhere you look.

Literally maybe 2 or 3 high performing magnet schools may qualify...like Westdale or Mayfair Lab into Liberty or BRHS

Fine with this.

Having to have younger kids get up for 5am in order to eat breakfast and get ready for school at 7-730 is BS.

I thought the same thing even all the way through highschool.

Like Shaniqua and Tyrone have healthy sleeping habits. Teaching in EBR was hell on earth.
What time high schoolers who work and do sports start those activities with an hour and a half start time?

Interesting.

I just read a book about our circadian rhythm and how schools are changing start times like this due to this exact reason

Freakonomics did an episode on this. TL;DR: it didn’t work.
