Why do people still participate in religious rituals? Hasn’t it become clear that they’re contrived exhibitions of power by “holy men?”

You mean the Vatican II catechism prepared after the Church was infiltrated by communists? No thanks.

My God some of you are complete Neanderthals. Being a strict Catholic does not mean you bypass all acts of compassion and love to the grieving by lecturing. Right or wrong.

A little common sense should come into play here, no?

Off to the office on a Sunday? Are you a preacher for another religion?

You're right. Priest did nothing wrong. That's why he won't be allowed to do funerals anymore

Jesus Tapdancing Christ

I am not saying the priest wasn't an insensitive was who could not have delivered his message in a better more tactful way.

My only point is that WHAT he said was not contrary to the teachings of the Church that the parents apparently are members of.

The fact he's not doing funerals anymore has nothing to do with doctrine and everything to do with the fact that the RCC has a big fricking PR problem right now.

NO... It’s called ridiculous expectations, and it’s very unfair to the religious leader and the religion. The expectation being that they want a legitimacy or rubber stamp approval from a religion and religious leader, while knowing good and well what that religion teaches about such things,

If all you want are niceties thrown out from someone, just hire someone that will do so, but dont expect a religious leader to shut their faith off for you and blow smoke and rubber stamp it with their religion. They must speak about such things. It’s their mandate to stand and reprove.

Call a Unitarian. They’ll tell you what you want to hear

Truth hurts. Perhaps family should have been more aware and proactive in treating the kid.

Just curious.
Has this priest talked of others that might not make it to heaven, too? Such as rich people? Gays? Adulterers, including divorced?

Right, because this priest judging this child has zero bearing of what young boys he puts his penis in

I mean, all the priest has to do is "confess" for absolution and he is good to go......and a relocation

Understanding what the church actually teaches on suicide would be a good place to start, no?

If showing emapthy is ridiculous expectations then we are lost. Being compassionate isn’t abandoning your faith. It’s called being human. Take your faith and shove it if you can’t see the difference.

Right? I've read discussions on this story multiple places on the internet, and the responses in this thread are from another planet.

It's ridiculous to think a stranger is going to say words that will make the family of a person who committed suicide feel better. The family should have got their arse up in the pulpit and shared their son's story and how they loved him.

Why would you call a priest to do that? Just get someone to speak on the behalf of the deceased. You know what you’re getting into when you call a religious leader, so why ask them to speak at such an occassion? Just call on a friend who is a good public speaker.
