Couldn’t be going into a better area for Jamaica. Montego Bay will get some nasty winds but it’ll be heading through Cockpit Country once it gets past the coast. Mandeville is the largest city there nearby. It’ll split between Montego and Discovery Bay on the way out.
Luckily not too much critical infrastructure is in that area on the southern coast. A direct hit on Kingston would’ve damn near collapsed the country.

Seeing the electricity pole makes me wonder how do island countries get more of these and anything in general when their whole island/majority is devastated?

More of anything. Poles. Transformers. Power lines. Anything.

Hurricane Melissa Tropical Cyclone Update
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL AL132025
1000 AM EDT Tue Oct 28 2025
...CATASTROPHIC WINDS MOVING ONSHORE SOUTHERN JAMAICA...
...LAST CHANCE TO PROTECT YOUR LIFE...
...1000 AM EDT POSITION UPDATE...
THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING SITUATION! TAKE
COVER NOW! Failure to adequately shelter may result in serious
injury, and loss of life. Residents in Jamaica that experience the
eye should not leave their shelter as winds will rapidly increase
within the backside of the eyewall of Melissa.
To protect yourself from wind, the best thing you can do is put as
many walls as possible between you and the outside. An interior room
without windows, ideally one where you can also avoid falling trees,
is the safest place you can be in a building. You can cover yourself
with a mattress and wear a helmet for added protection.
NOAA Hurricane Hunter Aircraft find that Melissa continues to
strengthen with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph (295 km/h).The
minimum central pressure has fallen to 892 mb (26.34 inches) based
on NOAA and Hurricane Hunter Air Force Reserve aircraft data.
The next update will be provided with the full advisory package at
1100 AM EDT (1500 UTC).

Would make it the third (i think) strongest in record in the Atlantic, and right before landfall
That’s the issue.
People talk about these historic storms but many weakened somewhat before landfall.
This storm is strengthening and will impact Jamaica at its absolute peak.
The only positive is that compared to storms like Katrina that were massive this is a tiny in terms of width and it’s not making landfall in Kingston.

Foreign aid and NGOs assist the local government in paying for infrastructure/ equipment to be brought in. I guess I’m not fully understanding the question.

What would the gusts be in this monster?
Posted on 10/28/25 at 9:15 am to antibarner
On the surface, around 210-220 or even higher if there’s a mesovort. Not sure about the speeds aloft. Could get some 260mph gusts a few thousand feet up.
But that’s just for a few brief seconds

It had what I would think a hurricane would need to do it, a very deep pool of hot water and a long window of no shear.
Does frick with my conception of why EWRC happen. Though I do remember Irma having a long run without an EWRC (hinted at it a few times before finally having it happen).

I think I saw that they use 128% of sustained winds to predict gusts.
So 185 sustained would put you in the estimated 230mph gust range.
Maybe someone here with better expertise can weigh in.

Anyone has some good links to live streams?
Posted on 10/28/25 at 9:19 am to rmnldr
And It's mountainous terrain no telling what the winds might be. Pray for those folks.

The most accurate way is to use what NHC says the sustained wind is as what the gusts will be.

Looks like a dropsonde measured 172 kts (198 mph) at the surface. Of course this is unofficial until the next NHC advisory.

219 kts just recorded on a drop in the eyewall.. breaking her own record
That’s 250 mph (gust)
Unfortunately some of these winds will reach land in the mountain areas

Luckily the taller and more populated mountains are on the east side of the island. The area north of where landfall is taking place is largely unpopulated
