So, I'm a Chemist.
MS degree.
Mid 30s.
Good financial situation.
Wife earns good $$$.

I spent 3 years in refining as a lab tech.

Several years ago.
Moved on to a great Chemical company as a Chemist/asst manager type role with unlimited options. Absolutely loved my job and company. Planned on staying 30 years.

I was spunoff into another company 1.5 years ago.
Now, my segment is being spun again into another different company end of this year.
I see zero future here. Just spinning wheels. Not getting valuable experience. No paths upward. Constant financial engineering.

I might have opportunity to become a manager at another Chemical company. It would be a good job. Much better than my current one and likely 15k increase in compensation.

I'm hesitant. I am not sure this job would be a "forever" job. My wife says if offered I should take it for the management experience. And, if want to I can move on in 4-5 years and be much more marketable.

I just love the idea of being somewhere for life.
My wife says that's simply outdated and doesn't often happen anymore.

Is my wife right?

It depends on what you want to do, honestly. Do you WANT to manage people?

Yes she's right. The only reason to stay anywhere for a career is defined benefit plans which are nearly nonexistent.

I think you’d be hard pressed to be confident any job will be your 30 year job.

If this moves you closer to happiness then the reasonable alternatives over the next year or two would.... take a shot!

Pick up this book if you’re going to be manager. Game changer.

Then if management is your goal, you will likely have to move around to have the best outcome. I’m in the same industry and they like hiring from the outside rather than promoting from within.

Take the manaagement job. In a few years if it's not for you, that is on the resume and will open more doors. I just went from the engineering dept at one major chem company and accepted a management position at another. Smaller plant but having that leadership team experience will make a management position at a larger site more accessible in the future.

We got 40 million unemployed Americans and you're asking if you should take a better job with better pay and leave a company you no longer see a future in on top of your wife that makes nice $$$? What the frick is wrong with you?
