Manufacturers might have stumbled onto something. Keep supply low and demand high = more profit for manufacturers and dealerships.

I brought this exact point to a family friend that owns a dealership, we may never see packed car lots again and I wouldn’t be surprised if manufacturers keep supply artificially low for this reason.

When people stop thinking they need to buy a brand new vehicle for their kid. Get his arse a $5k beater

When the economy crashes and demand tanks.

This. If you think that a F150 XLT or Chevy LT isn't worth 50k stop paying for it. I happen to agree with you but obviously some people don't

I remember when a "beater" was $500-$1,000

While I agree low availability has made prices high. Once/if manufacturing catches up I can’t see dealerships keeping stock low to inflate prices. Some dealership will stock up and sell in volume below MSRP and still make just as much profit while generating incredible traffic/visibility for their dealership brand name.

My 03 911 is getting long in the tooth, so while I had it in for service at the Porsche dealer I inquired about a new one. I was told it would be at least 18 months for delivery and the price would be $30,000 above MSRP.
Guess I'll keep the 03 for awhile.

When our “free market” government graciously permits manufacturer direct sales.

How old is this son? Is this a close to graduation from college gift? Is he actually buying it and you are just looking?

I have a 2014 911 4S with about 30,000 weekend car. I keep getting offers from local dealership which is ridiculous low.

Carvana is staring to liquidate. Maybe talk to a dealer to see if they'll cut you a deal on one of those.

Shouldn't be much longer. Just depends on when college loan payments kick back in.

Also, they make money (maybe even more money) through the service department; if they sell half as many cars that probably is going to decrease their service revenue.
