it could have broken the tranny parking lock, if it did, it cracks the housing and tranny is now toast
test if the parking brake works by trying to roll it forward or backward while shifter is in park, if no damage to the tranny by being forced backwards it should work as intended and not want to roll, if it keeps rolling then you have internal damage in the tranny

I try to make a habit of looking where i'm driving when i get in a vehicle. It's not that I think i'll miss the driveway, but rather that there could be children/animals walking behind me.

This pretty much nails it. There is a sprocket attached to the output shaft of the transmission and a spring loaded pawl that engages it when the transmission is placed in park. Stop on an incline, place the vehicle in park and release the foot brake. It will likely roll back and inch or two until the pawl engages a tooth but it shouldn't be much. If it rolls much further or you get a chunking sound and studdered movement you have an issue.
Keep in mind, especially a truck transmission is designed to hold a fair amount of weight on a significant incline and given this apparently was not a significant dynamic event chances are it is just fine.

Jesus were you pulling a Mater and driving backwards at 40 mph? Moving a truck 5-7 feet takes some effort if it’s in park.

Good news--the driveway has a tiny slope and his truck didn't roll down it. Glad someone pointed that out. Crisis averted perhaps.
