People going out and buying vehicles at the prices they are are dumbasses
Posted on 3/10/25 at 11:13 am to Ihatethiscity
I bought a 2023 for under $20k
I did have to go to another city to buy it though.
But if you live in a major metro area you can find something better than what you got. Or dont.
You don't need an $80k new suv.

COX - Used car inventory
COX - New cars (January)
Used vehicle sales have trended upward for the last couple of years, especially in the $15k and lower range (that's the range with the least days' supply in the used market). New car sales have slowed slightly, but it's apparently still enough for dealers to have high prices and high financing rates. If we're coming into a recession, there's going to be a lot of extra inventory on the lots this time next year as many decide the economic climate isn't secure enough to spend such a large chunk of change as well as those who can no longer afford their large car notes and would rather just have their vehicle repo'd than go underwater trying to sell/trade for something less expensive.

Thank you for the info - know anything about the "Team" dealerships? Thats where we got my wife's civic. Idk if we got ripped off or not. Was about $20k for a new civic in 2020ish.
I mean, if you bought a new car 2020ish during the shortage, paying MSRP was considered a good deal, so if you got a base model Civic $20k was probably about right.
I don't know much of anything about the Team group other than they've been around a long time. All I DO know is that I went car-for-car with Team 4 or 5 times while working at Paretti and I never lost a sale to them.

no ac/heat
My brother in Christ….
Your sig says Garden District…do you live in either BR or NOLA? If so, on what planet are you good making nearly a quarter million a year driving around SE Louisiana with no friggin AC?
Stack your coins for a few months and pay cash for a less-crappy 5 yo CRV. For the love of all that’s Holy.

I'm not paying out the nose for something per month
Richards Honda has brand new 2025 CRV EX's for $35k. Base models for slightly under $31k. I would hardly call that "paying out the nose" for a car, especially one that reliable and with good gas mileage.
I do understand the paid off car angle, as I have one and plan to drive it for another year, but there is zero way I would drive around in BR without A/C right now. I would give up pretty much everything before I would do that. And I love summer weather.

. Right now its fine.
If you plan on still using it at all in summer, take it now to get it repaired unless you want to wait 2 weeks+ when everyone else takes thier car in on the first 90* day.
I'd rec AGCO auto.

Royal Honda and Bryan Subaru seemed to have positive reputations, and the guy who owns Banner Ford on the Northshore is a family friend and he's a great guy.
All three are not good. Hell Matt Bowers is a step above Banner!

YMMV I suppose. Can't please everyone. Hell, the place I worked at in Montana had a sterling reputation and was the largest dealer in the state, but we had our fair share of haters. When you sell 700-900 cars a month, you're going to piss someone off here and there.

Fix the ac.
You can buy a replacement radio from Crutchfield for $130 or if your old unit had navigation $300.00 Crutchfield will also sell a custom cable that will plug into your cars wiring and it is easy as pie. Youtube videos show how to remove old unit.
If its paid for I would keep rolling.

That sounds like the right move, you’re right, I would want to avoid a note if at all possible right now.

I have a 2013 truck with 100K miles. It is dented and scratched to hell, but can easily go another 100K miles (toyota). Plus I work remote so I maybe put 5-7K miles on it a year. It has been paid off for years so I am driving this thing into the ground. If it still drives great in 20 years, I'll still have it.

A 2019ish Tundra with 100k miles is mid-30s. Not sure it’s a better option than buying a new one.
This is what I think is propping up the new car market. It almost doesn’t make sense to buy used if you don’t have to.
If there was any frickery going on, that’s where I think it would be.

it sucks for sure, AC gave out near the end of summer last year. At this point I can't bring myself to fix the AC because the cost of fixing the AC is about as much as I'd get for selling it
That's what eventually causes me to get rid of mine. Cost of repair is more than the cars value.
I'm beyond the age of giving a damn what other people think of what I drive. It's kinda nice having it paid off and not caring if my wife backs into a tree.
The no ac is a no go for me. What's wrong with yours. It may not cost much if you fix it yourself.
I got an 08 I saved by putting in a new ac compressor took me about an hour and 100 bucks for the part and about 40 for the refrigerant

You should have gotten a non-English speaking nanny
I have a friend that's flown one way from MSY to pick up a truck from TexasDirectAuto in Houston. It's not a big deal to shop out of state, and you have four major car markets in the state next door. If you're limiting yourself to within 100 miles of BTR, you aren't going to get a ton of options.

The ones that are Financing anything over about 40 K sure. The ones paying cash probably just don’t care.
