The stereotypes around Alabama haven’t been true for over a generation.
There’s still a whole lot of disgusting Gump-y behavior happening in the out-of-sight corners of Alabama.

I live in a very affluent part of Birmingham and I have for 25 years so it’s always strange to hear Alabama be referred to as “poor”.
After living our entire working careers in Texas and Louisiana, we just moved to Birmingham about a year ago. I still work some in Louisiana and we still have a house there unfortunately since the market is terrible. My wife refuses to go back. She told me today that moving here was the smartest thing we ever did. We have had some friends from the flatlands visit us and I guess it is all perspective. They complained about how everything is spread out and all the roads wind up and down hills. My wife prefers her daily winding drive from work up Hugh Daniel Drive into Greystone to the top of Oak Mountain, past the lakes into our subdivision. Last night we had dinner in Mountain Brook and walked around Mountain Brook Village. Today we spent time downtown and drove past all the outdoor dining up 20th Street before eating outside at a restaurant on Highland Avenue, afterwards driving over the mountain and walking through the Botanical Gardens. People don’t realize how nice it is here.

You're right. Conservative countries like Namibia, Nepal, and Iran are killing it right now.
Posted on 2/21/26 at 5:39 pm to TooFyeToFly
What makes those countries conservative?

As opposed to where exactly?
I’ve been a lot of places and every state I’ve ever been to has the same stuff happening in the wrong places if you go looking for it.

Nepal has a significant actual Communist party. The rest of their government parties are still mostly left wing. You definitely don’t know what you’re talking about

Most people who don't live in Alabama don't understand that there are THREE Alabamas.
1. Cullman up and the rest of North Alabama (including an enclave on the south side of Birmingham)
2. Baldwin County
3. Pretty much everything else in-between.
Two of those are areas in which I am willing to live (and I do). The fact of the matter is that Alabama is no different than any other state or major city. There are places you WANT to live and places you DO NOT WANT to live. Every state in the south is the same - Alabama has the Black Belt's economic disparity, Mississippi has the Delta, Kentucky has Appalachia, Birmingham has Bessemer, New Orleans has the Ninth Ward, so on and so forth.
Huntsville is growing so fast in part because of the booming manufacturing economy but also because people who get transferred in because of the military/NASA and they end up loving the area and come back for retirement. There are many cities in the south that have such merit. There are a few people who end up not liking Huntsville, but those people are few and far between. One of my fears is that Huntsville eventually turns politically because of all the influx, and thus fundamentally changing many of the things that make Huntsville great.
But that's just me.

It shows just how out of touch they are. Nothing they have as a nation even comes close to what exists in Huntsville, Alabama.
This comes with a cost. Huntsville is slowly becoming a mini Nashville. It will be the largest city in the state and it will be blue due to the influx of outsiders.
