While gdp/capita isnt exhaustive, don’t you think it’s still significant to study the *trends* in gdp/capita over time between two subjects?

Canada as late as the 2010s was well ahead of Alabama on gdp/capita.

It’s notable to see the shifts

You’re 100% correct, my mistake.

True, it isn't irrelevant. Alabama residents are also saddled with a lot of debt per capita. Nearly double when looking just at federal debt. I don't know how that ranks when saying someone is poor.

It would be like saying that your neighbor is doing so much better than you because he has a larger paycheck. Forget that he is borrowing against his company to pay himself and angel investors are keeping the bills paid.

You have all your bills paid off and a nice retirement, but your paycheck is smaller.

This is so true. I always get a chuckle when I hear elitist douchebags throw shade at places like MIssissippi and Alabama.

(a) they are still light years ahead of most of the world. If said elitist dbags would travel anywhere other than influencer hotspots they would realize this;

(b) the whole GDP per capita thing is a bit of a misnomer, too. It works like an average. You have some places in AL, MS, LA that are pretty poor, but that doesnt' mean the places I've lived in those states are poor or crummy. My schools are great, my neighborhood very clean and quiet, my restaurants decent...

I'm not losing a lot of sleep about lower GDP/pc than Illinoist and New York. I'm also not worried about my NFL team leaving the state nor a 10pct property tax increase because my leadership is a bunch of brain-dead socialists.

Are you making shite up? I didnt mention GDP. I typed about leadership and how well the state has been managed. Diversifying the economy and growth at a pace so infrastructure can keep pace has
Is paying dividends.

I love Canada.

Our dollar spends so hard there, I feel like I’m taking advantage of something.

My bad. I was basing this off the OP and the main line of discussion in the article and thread.

Good job on the fricking to make all those people.

Alabama’s demographics are improving year after year. Meanwhile Louisiana’s are doing the opposite.

Many of the good apples are leaving for greener pastures. Unlike in Alabama. They are retaining and attracting people. Especially Huntsville

I mean there are a lot of non-southerners and non-Americans (that know about Alabama) that think the state is an actual 3rd world country and dirt poor. Some parts of the state are bad but it’s not quite as bad these particular people act like it is

I remember seeing idiots on Reddit posting an article in which a UN official compared the state to a 3rd world nation and people in the comment section acting like countries such as Brazil and Vietnam were on par

Which is a great testament to just how great we have it and what our system has enabled us to do. We’re fortunate to be born here despite many of the problems we see here daily.

I live in a very affluent part of Birmingham and I have for 25 years so it’s always strange to hear Alabama be referred to as “poor”.

Birmingham has money, Huntsville too and is continuing to grow. But let’s not forget our Gulf Coast cities. Fairhope is top notch.
