I get that. But adding another functional city inside the parish is better for the region than not having it. And this thread is focused on the Baton Rouge region, not just the city.
I'll agree with that

Not just NBR.
Baker has shown a complete inability to keep a supermarket outside of Walmart.
They managed to frick up getting Albertsons’ some years back by not wanting to sell liquor there, so they worked out a way for that register to be outside Baker. Store still ended up going bust.

Gravy can't wrap his head around the idea that businesses he expects to be in north BR are started by a person like you and I. Any business started their is taking a huge risk and if it were something we started, like let's say a burger joint, it would have to come straight out of our wallets.
That's foreign to him

I have a general development question because I've seen how this has worked in the past in St Louis, but is the Government St road diet helping with business development along that corridor?
It's been done in a couple different places in St Louis with really good success.

I don’t know actual numbers but I certainly have done a lot less business that way since it started.
That area was a traffic shite show before they started messing with the number of lanes.

At this point, any business started in that area is likely to be by someone in that area.
Sal ain’t gonna open Sal’s Pizza in NBR if he thinks Mookie will toss a trash can through the front window as part of a riot.

The plan for Govt st has definitely helped grow that area. I know the plan is to eventually cut down to only have 2 lanes (which I think is stupid), but the street has grown exponentially from when I was in high school not far from Govt.
One problem with re-development of the area, people cry racism when an establishment spends millions renovating a building then expects guests to look and behave in a civil manner.

St Louis has a great street grid, and is typically rated the best traffic city among top 20 metro areas. So I can see where St Louis started from a different place.
And the areas where it was done weren't major thoroughfares and had good population density giving good potential for walking traffic. That's where the business booms in those areas came from.

And the existing business there....Tony's was catching slack from him and his worthless ilk because the business took steps to stop workers from giving away product to their friends. I don't know if it's willful stupidity or not.

I would understand if they did it in the two block stretch of Jefferson between Claycut and Government because that is an area with a ton of restaurants and small shops on both sides of the street that has shown success with a lot of foot traffic on “white light nights.” Even though that is technically a state highway, thinning that two block area would be realistic.
Government as a whole? Less so IMHO.
A lot of what is on Government is pretty spread out to the point where walking isn’t feasible for a lot of it. One isn’t walking from Fleur Du Lis down to the shops at Westmoreland.

Maybe they just need a better police presence but in reality, there's just a lot of crime really close by, too. I think the efforts have really improved the area thus far, that's for sure. I find myself going to a lot of good restaurants in the area more often but as far as walking around a lot outside of the major events, that's a no for me.
Posted on 10/14/19 at 10:35 am to MrJimBeam
It comes off to me as trying to force development on Government while at the same time attempting to push people over onto other side streets they spent a lot of money to develop.
No one wants to take North Blvd from Foster to downtown and no amount of road diet is going to make people think it is a better idea.

Traffic does need to improve but to be fair everywhere I travel for work these days has bad traffic at key points during the day.

I don't want to continue to sidetrack this thread by only discussing the road diet. I only brought it up because I remember Government being kind of a dividing line that could help spur development northward. Essentially allowing some reclamation of that part of the city. And having seen how that has worked around me, I was interested in seeing if it was having the same effect there.

The only hope for NBR is to build off of already successful areas that border it like government, old goodwood, Tara, etc...
Posted on 10/14/19 at 11:27 am to lsu13lsu
Which won’t happen.
Anything which isn’t directly in NBR and catering to them is a nonstarter.
This is the same group of people who lost their shite over the new subdivision going up by Government and Lobdell because a large antebellum home was left standing while everything else got flattened.
Damn thing has been there for decades and no one gave a shite until the area around it got cleared and made it visible.

Look I'm a republican but lets be honest here... JBE increased taxes to save us from Jindal's stupidity. I agree with your list and that Taxes are a big issue and should be listed but its hard to blame JBE, for solving the shyt show of a problem he inherited.
This is an ignorant statement.

Maybe we could get some of those scooters you pay for with an app then just drop wherever the frick you feel like. Have them run between downtown to lsu and up to claycut.
